Both of these teams were absolutely stacked top to bottom. What a great time to watch hockey

Yzerman by a hair. The two 60 goal seasons and 155 points put him over the top. Outside of that, you would be hard pressed to find two other NHL HOFers who were as close to each other in career trajectories as these two.

Two legends and either one has a solid case. Call it a tie.

As always when I am asked this question, only one answer comes top mind.
It will always be no. 19

I’m biased, I say the Captain. Sakic was fucking great too though. I’ve never held a hate for another team that was a strong as the hate I had for the Avalanche.

Joe Yzerman and Steve Sakic were better

Don’t make me choose man. Those two were best part of my childhood. (Still miss having Detroit in the West cause the rivalry)

The real debate was Fedorov vs Forsberg

The better question
I think they are both GMS now but could be mistaken. So who is the better GM?
Neon_Sternum
Sakic because he got Devon Toews for two second rounders.

Yzerman would have to get my vote. But not by much.

Personal preference. They’re both on the same level

Yzerman.
Because he was a Red Wing.

Can not pick between these 2 awesome players.

I find it funny how those two players are always paired together.
There is no real reason for this appart being two Center from rival teams playing in the same era but we rarely see other Center or that era pinned against Sakic and Yzerman.
I’m a huge Sakic and Avs fan, he is probably in my all time top 3 favorite player but ever I have to say it’s a tie. Both legends and both great captain and class act.
They even both went to become GM of their team… linked destiny.

My bias says The Captain, but if I remember right, Sean Avery during his Wings days said that he was talking shit to Joe Sakic, one of the Wings players hit him pretty hard and told him to watch his mouth about Mr. Sakic. When you got that kind of respect to the point where the opposing team won’t tolerate slander or chirping on your behalf, that says a lot.
I don’t think you could make a wrong choice for either

My opinion is that Joe Sakic was better. He had less talent and experience around him when he broke into the NHL. Sakic has the Stastny Bros, Poddubny and Goulet, whereas Yzerman had Duguay, Ogrodnick, Larson, Kisio, Park, Gare, and Campbell. Sakic had to carry the team in many regards. Also Sakic did not have many impressive coaches – Lapointe, Bergeron, Chambers, Page, and Crawford. Yzerman having Polano, Neale, Demers, Murray and Scotty Bowman. Each are superstars in my opinion, but I think Sakic had to overcome more as an individual than did Yzerman.
