1. I know the NHL wants the Arizona market but maybe it makes more sense to move Coyotes to Utah and then circle back to Arizona in a few years when it's time to expand again. I'm not a Coyotes fan so it's easy for me to say but I'm just thinking abut what makes sense for the NHL here. Maybe Arizona and Atlanta for expansion in a few years?

  2. As a Yotes supporter from Day 1 (born & raised & will die a Sabres fan), I WANT the team to succeed in AZ. But, I'm afraid the Fat Lady is signing …
Build a G-D arena for for hockey downtown/Scottsdale and let's talk.

  3. I can assure you guys that Bettman and his NHL owner bosses don't give a toss about the "Arizona State Land Department's auction of a parcel of land on which the Coyotes hope to build their new arena", and that time's up on keeping the Coyotes in Arizona.
Bettman is one of the smartest executives on the planet in any field of industry and always has a backup plan for absolutely everything.
He is probably already talking to Smith in Utah about getting his financial affairs in order to buy the Coyotes from Meruelo (or the NHL) and re-locate them to Salt Lake City this summer.
There is next to no chance we see the Coyotes playing in Phoenix or anywhere else in Arizona next season.

  4. As an Islanders fan watching this from afar whose team had arena issues, I'm guessing the other owners are pressuring Bettman to get this resolved. And yes — playing in a college arena matters — where would they play if a new arena is agreed, how long would it take to get built? There will likely be delays along the way. I get the $$$ from the market but at what point do the owners force Bettman's hand.

  5. I'm 100% certain the NHL will have two schedules in the works as late as June. I'm not sure of anything else but that I'm sure of.

The NHL didn't formally announce the sale of the Thrashers to True North (Winnipeg) until May 31, 2011 and even then, reporting indicated the league still had two schedules at the ready in case anything messed up the Winnipeg deal. It's just smart to have contingencies in situations like this.

  6. The more this drags on in this crunch time, it might be hard to make an immediate transfer to Salt Lake by squeezing schedules. If not, will they continue play at Mullet for another season?

  7. SLC is waiting in the wings with a big check book and likely working on a deal with the NHL.
The Winnipeg ownership pulled off the Thrashers relocation at the end of May 2011 and were running in Winnipeg in time for the next season.
I expect the NHL will end this in time for the playoffs, announce the relocation and move on.

  8. I live in Atlanta and watched Bettman protect the Coyotes to the Nth degree when Balsille wanted them and move to Canada…and stand by and watch a terrible ownership group purposefully tank the Thrashers and move them away in a mere few weeks. I am rooting for you as I know how much it sucks to lose your team…but Phoenix has been given waaaay too much leeway here. Why can the Coyotes not pay for a seasons worth of rent in advance at the old Gila River Arena? Why can they not buy that arena and develop the land around it? What happens if they lose this land bid? Is there no other open property that does not need to go through a formal bidding process? My guess is the team will be in SLC next season.

  9. Just make 2 schedules? Do you think that gets done over night? The Yotes had since 2009 and can't get it done, move on….,.

  10. The success of the Coyotes depends on where they build the stadium. Tempe would have been an attendance goldmine. New site is basically in North Scottsdale. Better than Glendale for sure. …but not as good as Tempe was….. Boggles my mind why the voters of Tempe voted against the Yotes.

  11. It’s a huge black eye on the sport and the league. It either gets done soon, or they move. Im not one rooting for a relocation of the team but still. Hockey can work there, but this is and has been a horrible look on the NHL the franchise has been a dumpster fire since moving from Winnipeg except for 2011-2012 with the conference finals appearance

  12. Betman gave coyote fans EVERY chance in the world. We in Canada lost our team not because of ticket sales viewership.. but no cap league where small markets barley competed.. With salary cap it makes sense to give the country who cares about hockey more than yall another team… Alex is trying low ball for the 40 acres. Alex has sleepless nights because this land deal wont go through as he is a guy who backed out of glendale over a few million.. He wants arizonia to buy the arena and wants to price up his 250 ill investment into a BILLION.. Aint going happen IMO.. I watched a yotes game at home and WOW it was so small and quiet…No free agent wants to come to a arena like that… ITs over. Welcome back whalers
