Honestly, I’m with you on Cooch and Hertl not being moved if it’s within Grier’s power. Mainly because, like you said, the team needs that veteran leadership. They need someone that can help guide the young guns and show them the ropes. We don’t have Marleau or Thorton anymore that can help. I think their hearts are in San Jose and, like Marleau, care more about ending their careers here over winning a cup.
As for other trade options, honestly I think the only ones being traded that I’m afraid of losing are Kähkönen or Blackwood. Sharks have had chronic goalie issues for a very long time. And while they started the season off not so great, they have really come into form, and clearly have a pretty good friendship. But most importantly, they are an amazing Tandem, which we haven’t had in a very long time.
But with that said, I think Grier is afraid of another Adin Hill situation. While it’s not something we could have seen coming, it’s definitely something that will make him think twice. Which might keep them safe.
Personally, I don’t think trading either of them away for anything less than an Unprotected First round would be a good idea. Mainly because our Cuda Goalies just aren’t ready yet. And not through any fault of their own. But they’re not ready to carry a team like Blackwood and Kahkonen have to.
I think right now, the Smart moves would be trying to trade up ant Skaters they can. While it would suck to lose Duke, Luke, or Ferraro, if Grier can get some first or second round picks for them, it would be more than worth it to go for.

I agree if Couture leaves it'll be a Burns situation. Maybe he wants to cup chase on last season or two of his contract. Plus that's when Burns retention slot would open up which would make it easier to facilitate a trade to the team Couture wants to go to

I don't entirely agree with your point about the Sharks not having too many pieces to move next year that will require a retention slot. At this time last year we'd have said pretty much the same thing, but then with the Karlsson trade we took back Hoffman, Rutta, and Granny, then we traded for Duclair. I know we don't have a Karlsson-type trade coming this offseason (barring something like a Couture/Hertl move which I don't find too likely), but I could see us acquiring players like Duclair from teams who want the cap space and attempting to sign free agents like how the Ducks signed Klingberg last year, luring them in with a higher salary than they'd get elsewhere, then flipping them with retention at the deadline.
Of course if the price is right it doesn't matter and if we were going to use next season's retention slot on Granny anyway then we shouldn't concern ourselves too much with who else we might look to move with retention next year.
If I was Mike Grier I would do both the Toronto & the NYR deals in a heartbeat. As for Grandlund and/ or the two goalies, I would not trade any of them for less than a 2nd or equivalent, ( a 3rd/ 4th and a decent prospect). I would give Barabanov either a one-year prove-it deal at what he is making now, (2.5 mil) or a two-year deal at a little less, (2 mil to 2.25 mil per). As for the rest, I would get what I can for Duclair and the rest of the UFAs. Couture & Hertl's contracts are, IMO untradeable without retention.
If we can come out of the deadline with 3+ 1st-round picks I will be extremely happy to watch this team suck for the rest of the season. Especially if they start playing the kids.
A bold trade I’d be super into is:
Rangers: Anthony Duclair (50% retained) and SJ’s 2026 1st round pick (top 10 protected)
Sharks: Gabe Perreault
When you look back at previous years drafts to see how many players (%) from each draft round actually make the NHL and play significant games, you realize that first round picks almost always make it. For the 2018 draft for example 6 years after, 90% first round played in NHL, 55% second round; 48% third round; 26% fourth round; 35% fifth round; 26% sixth round; 10% seventh round. It makes very little sense to trade authentic NHL players like Ferraro or Kunin who have proven they belong in the league for a moderate to low chance to select a better NHL player in 6 more years. However, it does make sense to trade struggling veteran players who need a change of scenery or shock to get back to former shape such as Labanc. As many players say, it is hard to stay in the NHL and maintain a balance between what you are actually now being paid versus perception of your value to the current team. Many players are underpaid savagely for years of high performance, earn a great contract, and then settle into a comfort zone where their desperation and edge is lost, and they fail to pay off.
I now expect that Mike Grier will make only one or two minor trades because no one wants his players or will pay his price, so Sharks won't get any better position in 2024 draft. I think Sharks need to start out-scouting other teams and find players who are not struggling so much. Sharks still need right wingers and more young players with less chronic injuries. I think Duclair will get traded for a 2nd round pick or prospect; and that Barabanov will get traded also, maybe Labanc but more probably not. MIke Grier is running out of time to turn the Sharks around and bring back home attendance levels. Sharks won't be competitive for another 4 to 5 years it seems now. How can MG speed up this transformation? Grier is ruining his coach by putting him through the ringer of dismal losing game after game, shutout after shutout, and mega-minus play that numbs your hockey sense and nauseates.
I wouldn't trade Granlund for a 2nd right now, maybe over the summer. A 1st would be required now and the only match I see is with Colorado with Johanson coming back
Keep your eyes on the Lightning. They lose a Sergachev (LHD). Since that, they not doing anything good. Super Mario may be a option to fix the hole on that second pair. We know they do not value to much draft pick. I wonder if a third (2023), a second (2025) and a first to ten protected (2026) could be a fair trade.
