This is a puzzling broker deal for Carolina. They retained salary 1.3MM for only a 6th round pick(seems very expensive for 6th round pick)? and gave up signing rights to player? edit: Seeing that maybe it was only 687,500 retained by Carolina…but still thats expensive for a 6th round pick!
Again, why is Carolina doing this? There is a non-zero chance they'd face Toronto in the Playoffs. And 6th is almost nothing.

the nhl made a change this year that you cant do these 3 way trades without sending something back thats why the devils sent to the goalie prospect to Dallas and the canes sent Slepets

Ilya was good in Toronto last time around, hopefully he gets some more steady minutes, because if I remember correctly, he was all over the lineup, sometimes even scratched, even though he was one of the most reliable in that squad on the blue line.
I don’t mind Ilya but a third is a bit much. I guess that’s the cost of doing business these days

Boosh is a depth RD, something Toronto was in need of & he's known to them. He is a very physical, shot blocking D who seemed to fit nicely with Rielly last time around, to the point he got a nice contract as a UFA from Buffalo after the '21/22 playoffs. Good for him & I have no issues whatsoever as you need depth in the post-season. He brings an element that is needed in the post-season & that's hammering forechecking forwards. He can make a clean 1st pass, so I don't agree with those who think he's a liability.
Why the hell did Carolina help Toronto out? This is just like when Devils helped out in the Tanev trade, except worse. Are they just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts at this point?

So Anaheim gave up a fourth round pick for Lyubushkin six months ago, and get 3/4ths of a season from him and then flip him for a third round pick.

I thought Lyubushkin was quite unheralded in Phoenix, a very under-radar hidden gem.
Since that first deal to Toronto, he’s bounced around. Watching him play for my team (Buffalo) I don’t think he had the same impact there as he did for the Coyotes. Now he’s back in Toronto after a disappointing stint for Anaheim (led them in blocks, but no offense and minus-13) so I figure he’s just a depth signing on a team that’s 17th in Goals Against, and has four players with more hits than Ilya.

It's a strange move by the Hurricanes, unless they're looking for Anaheim to do some reciprocal salary cap laundering on a future trade for a goalie or are working on a future trade that involves Toronto. After missing out on both Tanev and Zadorov, Toronto had to get a stay at home right hand defenceman from somewhere, since Giordano can't be expected to play big minutes all the time and Rielly hasn't had a compatible blueliner to pair with since Schenn. All the Leafs need now is a bonified starting goalie (they haven't had one since Andersen) and some reworking of their bottom six forward group, with almost no cap space or trade chips to make that happen.
The really funny thing is that the first time he was traded to Toronto (from AZ), they gave up their 2025 2nd round pick for him. So as of now, Toronto has given up their 2nd, 3rd, & 6th round picks for one player… in a draft that hasn't even happened yet.
As a Canes fan I'm so confused by this. I am grateful for the progress we've made over the past 5-6 years, but I still can not understand why we won't do what literally everyone knows is necessary to take us to the next level. It's so frustrating.
