Willy should be all FML at this point. He is our leading fucking scorer. Loosen the damned reigns a tad. And let the lad play.

Oh, and btw….fucking bench someone else high in the ranks, too.

I’d be pissed if I were Willy. Not because of just this. But that is has been going on forever. And it STILL happens when he is at the very top of his game.

Just imagine this was you at your job. And no one else ever took real flak.

And bench a D or two for that matter over 5 months or something, FFS. Replace with Marner if needed. Or whomever.

I have seen enough. This is horse shit.

Edit: apparently I have struck a nerve. Did I strike it with all the ‘boomers’ out there you’re always complaining about as the rest of you hail Willy? You’re a bunch of wagoning hypocrites. I’m over 50. Not quite a boomer. Maybe I don’t count. Some of you guys suck.

His change in OT was absolutely ridiculous

It’s fine as long as he holds Matthews, Marner, Reilly & Tavares to the same standards.

Okay, but accountability only works if it’s applied to everyone.

I don’t get this targeting. I see Marner trying to pass right through the middle of the ice through multiple players to try and hit Knies or Matthews and it almost always ends in a turnover.

    Never seen him get benched

It is frustrating that regardless of what Keefe says, certain players definitely get special treatment and others definitely get dumped on.

Imagine him benching Marner for half a period because he was cheating for offence. Would never happen.

I mean it’s the Coach’s job to figure out how to best hold their players accountable. Willy is very public about the fact he needs tough love and benching in order to play at a superstar level and appreciates Keefe keeping him on his toes by benching him after terrible efforts.

Keefe has also essentially demoted Tavares since he’s had a few stinkers lately and Domi played his way into being the 2C for Willy. I haven’t really seen much from 34 that makes him deserving of being held accountable, but he’s gotta find a way for Marner since we know benching him makes him sulk for the rest of the game unfortunately.

Mo however is a tricky one, like with every D-man, since there’s so few of them available per game, you can’t afford to bench them a lot of the time, otherwise the other D-men would be overworked. At least with forwards since there usually 12 of them, being down 1 forward for a few minutes due to benching won’t overtax the rest of the team

Also worth noting – they had just had a meeting about not cheating the system the day before, so Keefe was a bit harsher.

Willy came back fired up in the second. he’s a swede, they live and breath hockey at that level and if you dont think willy sr was an absolute tyrant during willys developmental years in the rink making sure every little detail of his game was being tuned, then you are sorely mistaken. Willy knows hard work, and he knows when he is cheating out on defense, keefe saw this and punished him, it resonated with willy, it fired him up. Marner is a leafs legend, full stop. An amazing player and we are lucky to watch that talent play multiple times a week for this team. With that said he is a little prissy pants who would fold under the self perceived pressure of failure that would come with being benched. Keefe knows that, tre knows that, we know that, and he knows that. Matthews is a stud who plays both ends of the puck at an elite level. « Captain » Tavares has been benched in the last couple weeks. Keefe is finally taking reigns of this team and knows hes on the hit seat. The season started off on the wrong foot but i think these guys are really putting the effort to make it happen. Marner will always be a cancer in the locker room with his privileged baby attitude, but god damn can we just enjoy the greatest team (era) this organization has ever put together, and they ain’t done. We still have 5 years of stable roster if they can just figure out how to add depth that will be around for a while. The rental game aint it Tre, learn from Du(m)bas(s).

Yes, good. I don’t agree with Keefe often but this was the right move! That was a boneheaded zone exit that cost them a goal at an important time. The core 4 aren’t exempt from accountability!!!
