I don't like the way the odds favor tanking teams. I would like to see the bottom 25% 8 teams in a lottery for the first pick, then after the team that finished 9th worse is entered in the draw. This is done until all nonplayoff teams have drawn the we go from 16th on.
I would say no to UFA's this year and I would be happy with the second line you mentioned
He’s not a fit at this time and I seriously doubt he would sign in Montreal. He’s doesn’t for the mood that they’re looking for , ie, age
We have 79.5$ million counting against the Cap next year. 10.5 million is Price but still that's not a lot of free CAP space. We are still retaining money next year on Petry and Allen so can only retain on one more player. I'm a huge Jonathan Marchessault fan and was very happy to see him win his cup. How much do you want to pay the 34 year old right winger for how long? Especially considering we are still also paying wingers Brendan Gallagher $6.5 million and Josh Anderson $5.5 million for Three more years. What is the point of signing him at this time? Can't we try to get rid of our old useless, expensive contracts before adding new useless expensive contracts for old wingers. Marchessault is a veteran pick up for a young talented team on the verge of being a stanley cup contender. Montreal is a couple years away from being that. Let Buffalo, or the Rangers or Carolina or Florida or Winnipeg or Edmonton or Boston spend their money on this guy.
The Habs might be ready to add the right, still young 28 or 29, free agent in 25/26 but they will have to improve a lot to be ready for that. Come 26/27, maybe you can add an older veteran to your mix, again depending on whether or not you have improved enough.
Montreal is terrible. That is not the moment to add an aged veteran with Stanley Cup experience who, if you are lucky , can only give you one or two very good years. You don't want to delay your rebuild for six more years while you wait for the Marchessault contract to run out. Try not to make the same mistakes over and over again. Try for some new mistakes.
