1. A funny trend for this Caps team is how Hershey was last year. Every game in the Calder Cup playoffs felt like the Bears won by 1 in a close game or got blown out

  2. As a Capitals fan, I think there's a good chance that Miroshnichenko, Leonard, or Cristall develop into a star. I'm not worried about our forwards. But it's our defense where I am worried. We don't have good defensemen at the NHL level, and I don't think that Iorio, Chesley, Alexeyev, etc. are a good crop of defense prospects.

We're in a much much better situation than Pittsburgh for our rebuild because of our prospects from Hershey and guys like Leonard and Cristall (and Miroshnichenko didn't do much for Hershey either). And because we're not giving away a first round pick this season or next season. And the Karlsson contract is worse than the Kuemper and Wilson contracts.

I honestly don't know what to expect for the Capitals this year about making the playoffs. During November and December, I thought they'd grab a wildcard spot (once my initial prediction of Buffalo looked to be wrong), but near the end of December I decided that Philadelphia was probably going to get it instead of us. Now my belief in Philly holding us off is slipping, and I don't really have any expectations. I don't know what to expect. I wouldn't even be surprised if Buffalo passes us and grabs a wildcard spot, but I have to bury this at the bottom of my post because it's so cruel to give Buffalo fans hope and then to let them down once again. But if Buffalo gets the last wildcard instead of us, I will be happy for them.

  3. Good race shaping up in the metro and for East WC right now. Gonna be very entertaining. Interesting to look at these 4 team’s opponents.

  4. If they get in, I'm betting they get swept. Would be the shite-est team in the playoffs imo.

  5. To be perfectly frank, I'd say this is less of an indicator of the Caps returning to form and more of an indictment of the Eastern Conference in general. The East this year is very top heavy – you have the Bruins, Panthers, Rangers, and Canes dominating from on high. From there you drop 5 points down to the Leafs, and then seven down to the next team in line, the Lightning. Meanwhile, the West is much more evenly matched, with only 13 points separating the Conference-leading Canucks from the 2WC VGK (compared to the 20 points separating the Bruins and the Caps). To put it in perspective, transplant the Lightning, Flyers, and Caps over to the West, and none of them are above the cutoff line the way things currently stand.

  6. Carberry had a great rep as an asst Coach, and is now showing he can be a good Head Coach. Team has had it's issues… Backstrom, Kuznetsov, loss of Orlov last year, injuries to key players etc. Players probably expected GM to sell at the deadline, but he didn't, denoting faith in the main group. Considering their horrible start, be quite the story if they got into the playoffs.

  7. Now they've gone with a youth movement the younger faster forwards are able to get in on the forecheck much quicker putting pressure on the defence.

  8. As usual, you've nailed it. I watch pretty much every Caps game, and they are bewildering. Lindgren has kept them in a lot of games, but the defense has really improved. Will they make the playoffs? Maybe …

  9. Great vid – Love it when you talk about the Caps.
Adding on, cause I'm that guy. I'd apologize, but if I was sorry, would I really be that guy. 😅
Over the remaining games, they have these teams twice: Toronto, Carolina, Boston, Buffalo, and Detroit. It's realistic to think that if they got a split for these games, they would have done well. Maybe even better than expected.
THG talked about the homestand coming up as being big. They had that with the road trip out west, and the rest of the season is like that. Each upcoming week is a gauntlet. The 5 teams unaccounted for above have plenty of opportunities for letdown losses.
I'm going to sit on the fence for the rest of the season. They've done so much getting here. If they miss, God bless them. They had a great run, and the future looks surprisingly bright. If they make, I'll be ecstatic. If they manage to touch up with third in the Metro, though, all control over hope goes out the window.
I think those playoff chances give you 20-25 points if you're above the line by default.

  10. The Wings are calling up prospects so they've flown the white flag. Washington is probably fine.

  11. What about the wildcard of RL. He's hinted he might play another year of college but if he turns pro at the end of this season he could be a huge factor in any potential playoff run. That dude is a stud

  12. Hats off to them for turning the season around. I’d be scared to face them if they make the playoffs

  13. I’m totally against rebuilding and any team should avoid it if they can. I’m a senators fan and let me tell you it’s been trash watching this team be bottom 10 in league the last 7 years. Selling off everyone for picks is a joke and if you can try and do a retool that’s the best thing you can do

  14. Caps!
Definitely the little engine that could team..steadily churning along winning enough to stay postseason relevant. Good coaching here! Okay, Ovi Oshie and company. ✅

  15. not only will the leafs be on their back-half of a back-to-back, the canes AND jets will also be on back halves against Washington. A HUGE opportunity for the Caps to pounce on some difficult opponents at home

  16. Caps, if they do make the playoffs, seem like the kind of team that would get blown out in the 1st round

  17. I want to see Ryan lindgren and Ryan Strome go to the caps, I’m not even a fan of Washington just like when brothers play on the same team and it would be fun because they are both named Ryan

  18. Caps look like 3rd seed and 8th seed is up for grabs for teams that dont want it. Islanders, Philly, Sabres, Wings. I am pretty sure the line is Washington has been playing playoff hockey for the last 3 power rankings. I am going with they are solid and playing as a team. I am also hoping for an Ovie rush of goals to help get closer to the record.

  19. The Caps have found their identity (boring) and everyone buys into it. I like the youth movement and how the young and older players are blending on the Caps. Backstrom retiring and the deadline deals have helped move the team in that direction. I think management as well as the coaching staff are doing a very good job this year and I look forward to a long playoff run!!
    LETS GO CAPS!!!

  20. Question for all you fine folks; if per sey we make the playoffs, the NCAA season is completed, and we sign Leonard to an entry level contract. Would he be able to make his NHL debut in the playoffs, or is that only eligible if he signed before the deadline? I am not inept in the contract rulings and am pretty interested.

  21. I have that Jersey as well, easily my all-time favorite. Should they squeak their way into the Cup chase, it would be completely unexpected. I'm not as optimistic about their chances should they qualify. Should they face Carolina, they'll be exposed. Carolina's forecheck gives the Caps nightmares and they'll be out in very quick order.

  22. They absolutely can
And I think their style is very suitable for playoffs
It’s like how Barry Trotz deployed them except they don’t have explosive scoring talent so they play MUCH tighter than they did in 2016-2018

  23. I'm a Devils fan, but I really with Capitals and Ovi good run for the Cup! I kind of like the way they play when they're on… Look very well coached and systematic… (envy 🙁 )

  24. Former Cap Chris Simon apparently took his own life today.☹️
    Rypien, Bogard, Blake, now Simon.
Something has GOT to be done for these poor guys suffering from their depression.

  25. A blazing hot powerplay, a brick wall in net, a bunch of young guys producing out there, and a revived Ovechkin? I’m gonna say they’ll make playoffs 🔥

  26. You should have a hockey show on a major network. This guy is awesome. You can tell he loves Hockey and he covers all the teams. I think he's a Bruins fan? but I won't hold that against him.
