I can’t help but think the last straw might have been trading Mike Cammalleri to Calgary in the middle of a game against the Bruins on January 12…

I think Gauthier gets a slightly (key word is slightly) bad rap.
It is probably not a surprise, but we were devastated by injuries, finishing second in most games lost to injury. Specifically, Markov was out most of the season which was a massive loss. They started the season 1-5-2 which really soured the season right from the beginning. November and December weren’t very good either. They fell way back in the standings early, and there wasn’t much hope it would improve.
PG fired Martin and replaced him with Cunneyworth, who wasn’t great, but got waaayyy too much heat for being an interim head coach. He traded Cammalleri mid-game, that was ugly, but it did signify the beginning of a “rebuild” which is the good thing Gauthier did. Cammalleri, Wizniewski, Gill, and Kostitsyn we’re traded away. We desperately needed to rebuild around Price, Subban, and Pacioretty, but Bergevin never really followed through with it.
Bergevin came in, unfortunately inherited a weak draft, and then made the team semi-competitive in his first year. I think if he would’ve continued to sell off assets for high picks, focus on developing young talent, allowed for the Habs to be bad for a couple seasons, the rest of the decade would’ve turned out differently.
TL;DR: Gauthier was bad, but the team was really bad and injured, and he tried to start rebuilding, but Bergevin took over and didn’t follow through.

In hindsight I still like him better than bergevin. At the time I was so relieved.
