It’s the worst +/- for a forward in the first 60 games of his career since 1979/80 and the 8th worst of all time. The 7 below him all played for expansion franchises in the 70s.

  2. CroikyThatsABigDingo

He plays on the worst team in the league…..

  3. HoosierHoser44

lol people act like ranking an individual player based on a team metric is a good reflection of him. That’s like saying Wayne Gretzky sucks if he played on a team with 3rd graders.

  4. dbag3o1

Bobo stat. Says more about the defense you’re around than your skill.

  5. serviceman199

We know this is posted every 2nd day

  6. notbannedagainyet

He needs to have his Steve Yzerman. AHH. There’s 2 parts to this game moment. That and another early first round draft pick or two.

  7. Gabaghoul8

What a bust. Chicago should trade him to Vegas for draft picks.

  8. Redditislame888

Tell me you wouldn’t want him on your team. The narratives people drive are nuts.

  9. pzyhdu6

hockey fans, if they’re not being racists, they’re being morons. no wonder the sport doesn’t grow. y’all are pathetic

  10. While he’s the best rookie this season, it should also be acknowledged that since Chicago sucks he’s basically free of any defensive responsibility and this is shown both in his scoring and his +/-.

  11. For reference players like jack hughes and leon draisaitl had really bad plus minuses their first seasons too

Its not often but high ranking players have been crazy bad on defense in their first years before. His game will come

  12. PeteRock24

It’s almost as if +/- is a completely useless stat…

  13. Canadian_mk11

Clearly a bum. Release him so he can head home in shame. Maybe his hometown team will give him a PTO, if he’s lucky.

  14. CurlingTrousers

Plays top line minutes against other top lines on an awful team. He’ll be fine.

  15. Sinister_Mr_19

This is precisely why +/- stats don’t hold water anymore.

  16. UnlikelyQtip

Erik karlson won the BEST defenseman trophy last year with a -26 🤷‍♂️

  17. commodore_stab1789

Clearly bad. We’ll give you Josh Anderson for him

  18. Little-Aide-5396

That’s a generational stat for sure

  19. IcarusLP

Yea totally terrible. Trade him to the Avs

  20. cheeseburgerwaffles

What a bust! And people think this guy could be rookie of the year?! What a joke

    /s

  21. DonCorlealt

Yea. Cuz his team is fucking trash. He does also however have a nearly 1:1 game/point ratio at 18 years old playing his first ever season on the worst team in the league

Did you come up this post with one brain cell?

  22. b_abooey2020

    A- he’s a rookie

    B- he’s a forward

    C- he’s on the Blackhawks

  23. Full-Studio-9775

Yea and the Blackhawks almost entire team is – by long shots .. and is literally 300 win percentage lmao one of the worst fielded teams in history. Stfu

  24. BeastlyChicken

Yeah it’s been a competition between him and Eklund for the past couple weeks.

  25. PaddyStacker

Unpopular opinion: I still contend that the Blackhawks are encouraging him to play an offense-first style. I don’t think he’s under any pressure to improve his defense right now which is why it’s so lousy. And I think it’s a marketing decision by the Blackhawks org.

They want him to show off his offensive skills and wow the crowd. Bedard is the ONLY reason anybody wants to watch the Blackhawks right now (and in the near future), and they don’t want to stifle his offensive game by having him focus his efforts on being a responsible 2 way forward who is concentrating on the back check. Plenty of times when developing forwards get that pressure, their offensive numbers slip.

When you think about the fact that the Blackhawks WANT to tank this season, it makes a lot of sense. Let Bedard score some flashy goals to impress the crowd, don’t ride him too hard about backchecking, and the result is offensive production at the expense of defense and a terrible +/-. Could Chicago win more games if they got Bedard to tighten up his 2 way game? Probably. But they don’t really want to.

Btw, this is the first time in his playing career he’s had a minus +/- at all. He was +39 with the Pats last season, which was the highest on his team.

  26. Bobbyoot47

Just as a comparison Bobby Orr was an unbelievable +124 in the 70/71 season. Three other years he was a plus 80, 83 and 84.

    Damn!😳😳

  27. throwitawaynow95762

Ignoring the age difference, since it’s irrelevant for the Calder, and with the gift of hindsight, I would not have taken Bedard over Faber on a hypothetical one-year and it’s over contract this season.

Next season? Probably, but not this season, and I think the majority of coaches and GMs would be with me. Bedard is a generational talent, but not the highest performing rookie this season, taking into account position and looking beyond point totals.

  28. CDL112281

The team is really really bad, obviously. But you wonder how that’s going to play out for Bedard as the years go by.

Like, this is a huge rebuild they need to do and it’s going to take forever

There’s not even a path to seeing the club be contenders.

I realize a couple really good picks and some smart UFA signings could change that, but this could be a hell of a lot of losses for Bedard by the time he’s 4,5 years into his career

  29. Cup-Oh-Noodle

Damn he sucks trade him to Seattle

  30. MrSCR23

Does anyone happen to know who the worst +/- Calder winner was? If he sets that mark it would certainly be an historic start to a career

Update: Did some digging on Hockey Reference and the worst is Gilbert Perreault’s debut season in 1970-71, he finished with -38 (Bebard would set a new record at this rate). Didn’t affect his career to badly if you ask me so maybe it’s a good sign for Bedard.

  31. Substantial-Recipe72

Yeah I simply don’t understand why this is shocking to people…. He’s not a defensive player playing on the worst roster in the NHL… it’s shocking he’s not -70…

  32. Sad_Donut_7902

He is getting no help offensively but he is also pretty terrible defensively. Both things can be true at the same time. His linemate Kurashev is also -40.

  33. Alone-Community6899

Beside the obvious skill and terrific shot, he is very naive, hence he gets rocked on regular basis.

  34. jaggedice01

I read on Eklund that his sources are saying that Chicago is looking to acquire an extended Karlsson from the Pens and Bedard could be involved or Pittsburgh passes.

  35. SkarTisu

All the more reason to give him the Calder

  36. Deraj2004

Time to finish the story, Bedard to Detroit on a line with Debrincat and Kane.

  37. butt_snorkelr

He plays the most minutes on the worst team in the league. Should we be surprised?

  38. philomatic

Sounds like he belongs on the Sharks. Please ship him over at your soonest convince.

  39. Significant-Cow349

He plays against teams top lines ans plays lots of minutes. The team tanked to get him—he has little support and only 18 years old. Those numbers will improve.

  40. kimmeljs

This is why I hate « Team Tank ». They think a generational talent will save everything.
