Friedman starts by saying he is interested to see what happens with Jake Guentzel. He believes breaking the rule for the trade deadline rental is easier than breaking the rule for extending an older guy.
He mentions the vultures were circling on Morrow and its big that Carolina was able to get him signed. Also mentions Bradly was another surprise signing.
Stating “nothing is done until it’s done”
He said definitively that Pesce was offered a 5×5 (1M raise) last off season which he turned down. He believes he won’t return.
Skjei they had unique offers to him and he’s heard he will sign and at times he won’t but, we will see. At this time it’s not done. (Seems like we are trying)
Chatfield was thought they would extend him before the year, has been off and on (talks) but, they do want to keep him.
He believes the team is looking into the future (summer 25) since Slavin and Burns will be up. They are trying to look at what caps going to be moving forward.
He ends by saying he believes that Necas is done this summer (gone)
“I believe it was easier and smarter to go for the shot this year than go for some term on these guys.“

Wow.
So it looks like the team will be completely different next year.
Necas departing is no surprise. Jarvis needs a raise. Keeping Chatfield will be more expensive.
We knew one of Pesce/Skjei would be gone at minimum.
Sounds like keeping Guentzel might be a pipe dream.
Burns retire? Slavin extend in 25? Niki-poo, will you escape Putin and make it over then?

Letting Necas and Guentzel walk would be a huge mistake

Wonder how we deal with Necas, do we just go for picks or do we try to get new guys off him? Would assume the former just because our cap situation in the off-season is going to be wild.

Sign Guentz trade necas ?

Looking different isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it might be a good thing.
One thing that you know for certain: this front office has made significantly more good moves than bad. They’ve managed to retool several times before.
The one move I think they really need to sell out for is Guentzel. He’s worked from day one and made Aho a better player. He’s absolutely worth whatever dollar amount he’ll go for.

My understanding of their Necas comments was that « it comes to an end this summer » didn’t mean guaranteed trade. Signing long term also equals « comes to an end » as I understood their discussion.
Also of note…Michael Bunting has been really good in Pittsburgh. As in *nearly* as good as Guentzel had been. Makes me wonder what about the fit in Raleigh wasn’t there.
« Dundon really a strong probability guy. » Probability says you let other people pay big money and longer term for Skjei, Guentzel, and Pesce and you sign/pay younger guys.

At the time it was the right choice, but locking up Svech over Necas is looking like it might be a mistake. Also that KK contract is beginning to look brutal.

Necas brings something that no one else has. Pesce is very replaceable. I have a hard time believing they will let Necas go without something huge in return

Carolina should see if they could get one of the young centers out of Columbus if they want younger players back of course. Like Kent Johnson or Cole Sillinger. They could also try to poach maybe Zegras in Anaheim I know people say he wouldn’t be a good fit here, but he still is an upgrade at 2C. I also wonder if Montreal would offer a young defenseman like Guhle, but I highly doubt they would. Carolina also could just trade Necas for a top 10 pick in the draft, but I think they would rather get an established roster player.

How. Did. They. Not. Mention. JARVIS.

I really think we have to re-sign Chatfield. He’s been very, very good.

At the end of the day if you have 4 core defenseman, a starting goalie and a good top line you can work around whatever else you need to.
The team will look pretty different next year but I like that they don’t give the moon to guys for the most part. It is what it is especially with the canes system

These are the same guys who were adamant we would never trade for a rental
Take everything they say with a large grain of salt
