Of course the mayor of Scottsdale is opposed to the arena project. The arena will be built just outside of Scottsdale, but the city will not benefit from any of the tax revenue, Phoenix will. If the arena was being built on the other side of the road in Scottsdale, he would be the biggest supporter of the project. I think people should not just take this with a grain of salt, but dismiss it as nothing more than a politician pushing an agenda.
Salt Lake City here we come.
haha no one in az. wants this fkn team. btw smith in slc is having a name the team contest. why? This may already be over. Merullio may be trying latest arena to get expansion team when it is done. Yotes finish with oil on the 17th. Stay tuned…
But if the coyotes buy the land couldn’t they build whatever with the land?
Gotta wonder if the reluctance is driven by water concerns
After seeing the mess that is the Oakland A's and the City of Oakland, no one is surprised that the cities in Arizona are against the Coyotes.
Of course that Scottsdale will say this due to what happened with the Los Arcos Project back in 1998…….
Fuck him and this bullshit state. I’m so tired of this. I want them to stay so bad.
the saga continues
Hello Quebec Nordiques 😁
Come to Oakland!
Scottsdale's mayor is smart enough to know that no city should trust Merulo after he skipped out on rent and taxes.
I've said all along that the Coyotes should've been moved "temporarily" to Quebec City until the arena issues in Arizona could be worked out. You know, just "temporarily."
This sucks i love flying over to AZ to watch my Kings play the Coyotes
They should move to Utah.
I still believe that they should just relocate to Salt Lake City and then figure out their whole arena deal without constant pressure from the NHL and what not. Then add an expansion team there afterwards. It’s too big of a market to not leave for good.
Yes!!! 😂
Too bad ,teams haven't been great but maybe hockey just not welcome in the desert.
How many parking spaces would that project need? 10,000 ?
This is reminding me of the Minnesota North Stars, Norm Green issues. When the Stars principal owner could not get along with the state's political leadership. Likely will have a similar result.
Idiot Mayors are ruining their cities.
Why does this smell like jealousy that the project will be in Phoenix not Scottsdale, this is the Coyotes best option and as they put their final roll of the dice
One part of me wonders if this is part NIMBY, part jealousy. The mayor doesn’t want to be a neighbor to the arena project, but might happily be home to the project and collect the revenues that are generated because of it.
Another part of me wonders about zoning and planning oversight and permitting. It seems that the state is the sole entity offering the land, but wouldn’t the city of Phoenix (or North Phoenix if that’s a separate municipality, I really don’t know) have a say in how the land gets used? We heard what Scottsdale has to say, but they carry little weight. Phoenix can impose more stringent regulations or requirements on the development, but I wonder if they have or will – other than backroom negotiations that may have already occured.
An interesting situation indeed. I would not be comfortable placing any bets on the outcome.
He never said they weren't welcome, his concern is the water/infrastructure issue. (Watch 'The Hockey Guy' for an accurate analysis of this issue.
Maybe the Coyotes are hoping that this fails. So that they can have an excuse to leave
Houston no because of the Houston Rockets owner .
Move to Oakland, bring back the white skates!
I was hoping that you could do a video on why Houston does not have a team and show us that tell me the Rockets owner is blowing it for the whole city of Houston.
This should be the final straw that's it no one in Arizona wants the Coyotes not Glendale, not Tempe, not Tucson. downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale. The best place for the Coyotes not that Commissioner Bettman would do it and that's to go to Quebec City which already has an NHL arena all ready to go. No matter what they do in Arizona it just won't work.
Well the land is in Phoenix, so idk why the mayor of Scottsdale even matter in this transaction. It between The Yotes, Phoenix and State of Arizona, not Scottsdale.
Well, well!… 😃 …How many times did he say "I demanded…" in his presser? (Can't stop laughing.) If I didn't know better I'd say he has short man syndrome…In the end I think Ortega's bellicose rant works against Scottsdale. Obvious from the start, this was all about Scottsdale trying to feathernest its corner, and try to manipulate the Scottsdale Road interchange (a State asset) all for itself. I could entertain the guy's argument even though I don't agree with him – that is up until the point he starts acting like a petulant child with "I demanded…", and also the very ill-advised put-down of Meruelo as "a rookie developer". Meruelo made his first million as a teenager in a deal with Walmart…To be sure, this wasn't a statement from the Scottsdale City Council. This was a grandstanding statement by a trigger-happy political aspirant, who apparently hasn't figured out yet that Arizona officials don't like being dictated to by mayors, even from Scottsdale. I'd be surprised if the mayor didn't draw a rebuke from the Scottsdale Council at-large. Some people just can't stay in their lane…
Brodie, do you think different ownership would get a warmer welcome from the mayor and council? Is it a personality conflict overriding this project?
It is all fun and games until the politicians create a problem. Reminds me of the failed lighthouse project on Long Island.
I'm not even going to pretend to know the politics of the situation, but those renderings look pretty darn cool. I haven't been to the Phoenix area in quite a long time, but if I found myself there, I'd go to that arena to catch a game.
Looking at this from afar, something about the Coyotes is really off. No one in the valley wants them or are willing to do anything to help them. I think it's probably best for them to just pack up and leave.
I'm not a resident of the area, so my view really doesn't count, and I don't have an opinion on whether the Coyotes should win the auction or not. I do, however, have a VERY STRONG opinion about the Mayor. of Scottsdale. This is NONE of HIS Business. He has a job to do in the City of Scottsdale. Scottsdale is big enough that running it should be his full time job. The people of Scottsdale are paying his salary, and he ought to be dealing with things inside his city and not interfering in the affairs of the City of Phoenix or the State of Arizona.
The world would be a much better place without officious intermeddlers like this jack wagon excuse for a so-called mayor shooting his mouth off about things that don't concern him. I sincerely hope that the State of Arizona sees this jerks asinine remarks for what they are, and gives this trash all the "consideration" that this rubbish deserves.
I’ve never seen an entire state hate a team so much.
Yeah They're Gone!
I don't anything, but those tons of reasons sounded to me as tons of excuses
Arizona hates hockey as much as it hates public education. Games at Gila River were amazing. This is a sad state of affairs.
Good move them to Houston
They should move to Oakland, that city knows how to work with sports teams to get things done.
