Après quelques jours de repos, les Penguins de Pittsburgh sont retournés au travail contre les Red Wings de Détroit dans le but de revenir en position en séries éliminatoires. Après seulement quelques minutes de jeu, Drew O’Connor a marqué le premier but du match en écrasant le filet et en récoltant un but poubelle. Les Red Wings ont répondu avec leur propre but. Vers la fin de la 1re période, Kris Letang a repris les devants pour les Penguins. Mais encore une fois, Détroit avait une réponse. En 2e période, Sidney Crosby a marqué son 41e de la saison pour reprendre les devants. Peu de temps après, Bryan Rust a ajouté à cette avance. Tout comme à la fin de la période précédente, Détroit a marqué un but en fin de match pour porter le score à 4-3 pour les Penguins en fin de 2e. Jeff Carter a joué un rôle important pour les Penguins en désavantage numérique, marquant un but en désavantage numérique pour porter le score à 5-3. Les Red Wings ont marqué deux buts rapides pour égaliser le match. Lucas Raymond a complété son tour du chapeau avec le 5e but de la soirée de Detroit et une prolongation forcée. Crosby a récupéré la rondelle près du filet et s’est replié pour trouver Erik Karlsson dans la fente haute. Karlsson a laissé un gros tir frappé passer devant le gardien de Detroit pour gagner en prolongation. Grâce à sa mention d’aide sur le but de Karlsson, Crosby totalise désormais 1 000 passes décisives dans la LNH. Les Penguins ont gagné avec un score final de 6-5 et sont revenus en séries éliminatoires.
