It might suck a little right now, but ultimately is probably the best move.

There is going to be unwarranted hate for this decision by some people.

Good. Let him develop more.

Good for him. Enjoy the experience, take another crack at the Beanpot and the championship if things go well. I’ll be really curious to see if his full line stays intact or what BC looks like in general next year. I kind of hope he gets a chance to play as his own man, as it were, and see what he really can do when he’s not caught up in 3+ years of line chemistry. He has legit skills in all aspects of the game.

Happy for him! No reason to throw him in there now.

I’ll admit i don’t know shit about how the NHL draft works. Can someone explain why he was eligible for the draft after his freshman year?
happyseashell
It would either be this or Hershey Bears for some more development time – no idea why people are mad
ImProbablyLunchin
Kind of a bummer because he was one of the guys I was looking forward to watching next season. It’s hard to say what’s best for his development in my opinion. I don’t think it’s bad for his development necessarily, but on the other hand he’s shown pretty much all he can at the collegiate level by breaking BC’s goal record. Not sure how much more he can improve his game down there.
I wonder if he would’ve returned even if BC had won the championship. It seems like part of this decision is that he feels like he has unfinished business. If so you have to take it as a good sign for his competitiveness and commitment.
TheBarbieOfSeville
not surprised. not really a need to rush him.
alejandrowoodman
I don’t think this was the right choice.
1. The odds of him staying to finish his degree are infinitesimal.
2. His development as a pro, with better coaching, facilities, peers, etc would be better.
3. The level of play in the AHL is far superior to the NCAA.
4. The longer he waits to go pro, the longer he’ll have to wait to sign his 2nd contract, which for most players is a big deal.
5. I think he could contribute as a black ace in these playoffs, as an “unknown” quantity at the NHL level, but at the very least, being around the team would be huge for him.
BoofWellington69
That’s dumb of him but whatever can’t blame him college parties are in fact fun
tommypopz
Maybe would have made a difference in the playoffs, but probably the best decision all in all.
StevenGlanzberg
College hockey has gotten way better over the last 10 years or so for pro development.
But wondering does it hurt more to play 30-40 games at college vs 70 plus games in AHL (not saying Ryan would be in AHL but just as example)
BoofWellington69
This fan base makes no sense years of yelling for young guys. Highest draft pick in years doesn’t want to join the team “good move” “great call no rush”. Where was this patience with Laviolette?
BCCRob44
And my only takeaway was “HE’S THIS GOOD AS A FRESHMAN?”
Special-Bite
I think that’s probably the best choice for him

He’s a freshman; this is the right move.

Sounds like something a dumb 18 year old would decide to do. Coulda worn an NHL jersey in a playoff game but wants to fuck around in college. Still so excited about him as a prospect but disappointed we can’t watch him at the next level
Onoudidnt
Guy was born January 2005. I don’t think it’s the worst idea that a 19-year old doesn’t want to be a “black ace” for an 8-seed NHL team. Dude is *listed* under 6-foot. We had an AHLer in the family and injuries are a real thing at any age, and especially at that age. Don’t blame him for wanting another year, especially how the season ended for BC.

Hershey needed you next season.
thenatureboyWOOOOO
Good for him, go be a legend on campus, win a natty, get some size and experience and come to Hershey the year after.
Clappin bombs and blondes buddy.

Slightly disappointing in the short term but definitely the best move in the long term. Wish him all the best – we’ll be seeing him soon enough
suburban_paradise
What a fucking idiot. This is a complete waste of his time and he’s essentially giving up $1m+ for no good reason. Trade him before he infects the rest of the prospects.
_SCHULTZY_
This absolutely sucks.
While it’s not harmful to his development it does stall it. There’s nothing left for him to learn at that level and he needs to step up to a higher level of competition.
Mac already said he looked NHL ready at development camp last year. His play in BC as a freshman showed he is elite among that level of competition. He’s been physically developed for the NHL since his draft.
I understand the desire to run it back with his linemates, but for all the talk about him being a big game player, it’s disappointing to see him decide he doesn’t want to play in the NHL playoffs in Madison Square Garden. I can’t believe there’s a kid growing up in hockey that doesn’t dream of that opportunity.
Giant_Homunculus
No brainer for him. He’s not one of these McDavid types that will skate around everybody no matter. Needs to build his body and physique. And hell, if you don’t need the money, who wouldn’t want to have another year in college?
HoldMyBreadstick
Can’t blame him. You’re only that age once. I’d be staying for all the hot college tang too.
Garak_The_Tailor_
I thought it would be cool to see him in DC, if he feels he needs more time at BC, fair enough.
Joshottas
I thought for sure he’d sign his ELC and be here for the playoffs. Oh well, which him all the best at BC and he should be a HB Finalist for sure.
Will probably have an easier time slotting into the top-6 after next season when a few of the forward vets are off the roster.

Disappointed because I think he’s got the skill to be a legit NHL player *right now* but I’m not super surprised and I don’t really have a huge problem with it. BC is a legit program and he’ll get top minutes
