You know that no GM can fix what is broken in two or three seasons. There are to many variables in the rebuild. You have to try things, but they don't always work. Steve Y is the best at it. Tampa didn't Gey great right away. Its a puzzle. Not every piece fits right away. But if anyone can do it, he can. Keep up the good work.
I feel as if getting around Raymond and Seider extensions concomitantly will make this a worse team next year. For me, not making the playoffs the year after next will make for the portent of a failed rebuild attempt (which does happen because players don't pan out).
Who is saying that Stevie Y did bad? Not sure Neil and D Mac are getting what many Wings fans were expecting. Again, like a broken record, when the Wings were up 10+ points on the teams that are now going to the playoffs (Isles, Caps) with about 3-4 weeks to go, they couldn't manage, even at half the pace of the Bolts' wins/losses, to secure that last wildcard spot, yes that last wildcard!!! Think back, better yet roll the tape, what you pundits were talking about when the Wings were in the first wildcard spot and on the virge of challenging 3rd place in their division. Then, after that Panther game and Larkin out for ages, the Wings went on a backwards roll nearly outside the last wildcard spot and eventually invited the Caps, Isles, and Pens to put them out of contention. Wings were so close and couldn't manage even to win one more game during that stretch. This could be attributed to the Wings organization as a whole, but you have to point to head coaching as the responsible party here. As close as the Wings were at the end of the season, Lalonde was making statements that just didn't sit well with many Wings fans, statements mirroring that of a defeatist. Didn't make any sense. Doesn't matter what the odds were at the beginning of the season on whether or not the Wings chances weren't good, they were smack in it right to the end. As a hockey club, you can't let one person out with an injury (Larkin) determine your hopes for a playoff birth. Too many excuses from pundits on protecting or shielding the Wings from any responsibility from not having made the playoffs. What were the predictions for Boston at the beginning of the season? Weren't they also a club destined for a rebuild as well? Bottom line is the Wings were that close, and gave it to the Caps and the Isles the chance to get into the post season, also obvious from some help by the Flyers. Just think, the Caps got in with the tie breaker results they had versus the Wings. If the Wings had one more point than the Caps, they would have been in the playoffs, and the Caps would've been watching from home. Excuses by pundits when the Wings were THAT CLOSE jist doesn't cut it for me. On his show/podcast, Mike Valenti was right. You guys (Neil and D Mac) are wrong (not because of Stevie Y, as Stevie Y relied on the results of the team's success at the trade deadline, but because the Wings were so, so close. Lalonde SHOULD have made it his top priority to get the Wings to the playoffs. He did not.)
I don't want to enjoy my season like Toronto and Edmonton just so my April and May is a failure. That's what 19 gets. That's what 25 gets and the boys. Steve got hear there was a turkey on the table. Now there's just peas. Boys are getting hungry. That's what you need.
I love Yzerman and believe in his process too – but it's become clear that there's nothing to gain from listening to Neal Ruhl because he will never criticize Yzerman under any circumstances
Fans are rightfully upset that after 5 years this team didn't make the playoffs. The "goalposts" moved from the start of the year to the end because (at times) the team played very well. After they got Kane, and then went on that winning streak in February, they looked like a dangerous playoff team. Stevie Y (along with the owner, other front office staff, and the coaches) decided to let the team sink or swim as it was (publicly stating that he felt they were good enough to make the playoffs as is,) but I feel it was to see how things played out. Why "rent" a player or 2 for a playoff push when if you kept the team As Is you'd better be able to see what, if anything, was truly needed? If they made the playoffs and however far they went, then great they'd assess after knowing what their strengths and weaknesses were. If they failed to make the playoffs, then they'd really have a crystal clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses. I understand why some may be upset, and some may be questioning Stevie Y, and I'm not just some Stevie Y slappy. I think they SHOULD have been in the playoffs and much improved by now as other teams "turned it around" within 5 years. But, other than them missing the playoffs again, I have liked almost everything they have done. Sure, I'd have loved it if they could've picked up a couple players to get them over the hump and into the playoffs, but what I REALLY want is a team built to win for decades. I think they are more than 1 or 2 pieces away (and that also is a criticism of Stevie Y) but if they can get the players to fill their holes in the off season that they feel can add to the team AND be around for more than just a playoff run…then that would put them into a much better place. Not contradictory because the circumstances would be different, but if they do that are easily playoff bound by next FA Deadline, maybe it would then make sense to pickup 1 or 2 guys for the playoff run if necessary. Hopefully their needs will be met this off season though so any FA deadlines moves would be either unnecessary or extra candy sprinkles atop their playoff team built sundae.
when Steve got here the cupboard was bare, the cap space was used up and he inherited a boat load of bad contracts. the last one still has 2 years on the books. and if it wern't for the free points from lost overtime games and shootouts, we would be in the playoffs today.
DMac is right about the casual fans. They don't see immediate results and then they start with critiques from the peanut gallery. They don't know how to look at the big picture and don't understand how far Stevie has brought this team from the virtual wasteland Ken Holland left it in when he departed. The wings are getting better not just in the short term, but in the long term as well. Trust the Yzer-plan!
I trust yzerplan
Get better defense. Opposing teams should not get straight looks into the goal from inside blue straight up almost unchallenged. Keep the shots from edge as much as possible. Sider needs speed skating practice. Goaltending is not the problem.
Yzerman signed Holl and Petry to horrible contracts. That doesn’t seem like someone who knows what they are doing.
Yzerman couldn’t find much in the way of D last year. Holl was a bust, Petry should retire, and Ghost is an add to the O, but not really the D.
I don't think goalie is as much an issue. Husso wasn't healthy. We need an upgrade on defense. Our offense was our defense a lot of nights and the goalies saved us a few games if I recall. Edvinsson will be better next year and so will Seider so we have that to look forward to Raymond can still get better and Debrincat will be back. People point to the collapse but in the same breath say well Larkin was out and the flu bug hit the team and our back up goalie went cold smh. Sounds like pretty good reasons to me so I look forward to next year. Maybe Kane comes back and stays a point a game guy. Can't wait to see!!!!!
I'm not so sure if Yzerman knows exactly what he's doing. Red wings been going through transition for the last 5-6 yrs if not longer. We need to see results here! We need new coach, goalies, defence! Red wings went through 25 yrs playoff stretch before, and now 8 yrs no playoff. Unacceptable!!! Somebody have to start taking responsibility already. Enough of this bullshit about transition. Fans are demanding to see results or we will stop attending the games at the LCA!!!
They could go get a top end goalie and they will still look like shit until they can figure out the turnover issue, our goalies were hung out to dry all year
We improved 11 points this year. All we need are a couple more points next season and we’re in
the season was progress. playoffs came down to losing that final game vs Washington. i am happy to see Lucas Raymond becoming superstar, Edvinsson getting ice time and all of the prospects. a bit disappointed that Berggren was not a regular. hopefully another quality defenseman is ready to step in, the goaltending is another year away from Cossa, i am excited to see who Stevie signs in free agency.
I love " were not talking to the casual were talking to the real fans " love you D mac ❤❤
They scored 274
But they conceded 270… which is 8th worst in the league
That defense needs to improve tremendously
You are as good as your defense
And go as far as your defense
More firepower won’t fix the issue
D Mac secretly wearing an underwear that says “Stevie’s number 1 fan” 😂
So this year is not Red Wings year?
And?
They got youthful talent.
Give it a couple of years and their bad times will be over
One thing they can do is to bring in a vet goalie like John Gibson from Anaheim (Pat Verbeek connection there), who on his day, still a good goalie. And Yzerman can send some defense prospects to Ducks (or something like Berggren). But it also depends on Husso’s situation since Husso and Lyon are both under contract for another year, and you got Cossa in the AHL already.
We have improved by a minimum of 6 points per season since Yzerman took over. If we improve by a margin comparable to the average margin we've improved EVERY YEAR since Steve Y took over, we make the playoffs next season no problem.
Goaltending is about number 5 on the list of reasons they didn’t make the playoffs. They don’t have an elite goalie but the ones they used did a great job of keeping them in almost all the games. IMO
Shots against – Wings – 2657… SA 'Canes – 2101…. 550 shot differential x 90% save rate leads me to believe that as many as 55 goals were caused by poor defense. But, +/- numbers tell me it's also a team that doesn't backcheck or play a 200' game.
I get it he wants to make a bad ass team that’s good for at least a decade
This show, the Wing wheel podcast, and locked on redwings are the only good takes on the wings this season!
Yzerman stated at the trade deadline that he was satisfied with his team. A man of his word. Trust the *Yzerplan?*
Yzerman did do a lot in terms of the roster Adding Debrincat and Kane were big moves. Sprong, Compher were nice pieces. Also having the three goalies was pivotal for them to have the run they did. Look I'm disappointed and frustrated like everyone else but when you take a step back they did make some big improvements this year. The team is much better offensively and if Edvinsson comes up sooner (was injured) they def get in. I'd like to see a different coach but I doubt it happens as I think Lalonde will get a third year. The wings should take that big step next year to not only being in the playoffs but winning a round or two if Yzerman can get another center and D man the roster will look good. They also need to keep Kane. That is key. I'd bring back Reimer as a backup but I think he will go with Husso and Lyon. I don't see Yzerman spending big $ on a goalie.
