Great show, but the OT goal was not a fortuitous bounce. Nylander pretty much confirms it by saying “they scored on a set play” in his game 7 post game.
Was not a "good bounce," it was a dump in and it could have bounced a bit differently and Pasta would have still gotten it because nobody stopped him going 100 mph toward the net! Unreal! Watch the replay, Pasta had a clear path to the net with speed because Marner looked like he was playing his first pro hockey game at that moment. It's game 7 OT and you don't pick up a streaking Pasta? Really???
It's tempting, in response to claims made by Mike and Dave on the Locked On Leafs' episode in question, to want the Leafs to hire their 1st post-Sheldon Keefe head coach (the 34:43 mark having featured start of such discussion). I see pressure so high on Treliving to ditch Keefe but there's no doubt this Leaf season was from top to bottom an unmitigated disaster. Yet who, should Keefe be sent packing, should Treliving hire? The Raptors last offseason replaced Nick Nurse with Darko Rajaković. Nurse, who would go onto coach his 1st season with the 76ers, got to see playoff action with a much superior regular-season record while Rajaković would oversee a significant worse regular-season record (down from 41-41 to 25-57 [the latter having included a near-franchise-record 15-game losing streak from March to early-April]). It won't be enough for the Leafs to just replace Keefe and make minor changes, as the Raptors did last offseason, around the edges. Throughout, for Ontario's NBA and NHL teams, an offseason that no doubt started for the 3rd of those teams (Leafs) late last Saturday Eastern Time, I plan to watch some episodes of the Raptors-, Leafs- and Sens-themed Locked On podcasts.

The power play and lack of offense killed the Leafs this series. You can also say maybe if Keefe didn't play Matthews after winning games 5 n 6 without him in the playoffs and went 1-4 when he was in the lineup. The shanaplan era is over bye bye Shanahan n Keefe changes are coming

As a team the Leafs played playoff hockey for three games in a seven game series. It isn't a recipe for success.
The power play was trash for weeks before the playoffs started. So was the Bruins power play. The Bruins made changes, and Keefe stuck with what fails.
Injuries. I will remind you of the Marner standard. Injuries are not an excuse.
Shanahan. If he stays, do they just roll everything back again, including Keefe? I mean, I thought they would clean house last year. Assuming that Shanahan goes or decides to clean house.
Keefe. Keefe is likely discussing his new contract with Dubas now.
Marner and Tavares both have NMCs and there isn't really anything the Leafs can do to make them go if they don't want to go. They can take away their letters and give them shitty minutes. But that raises the question of how do they respond. Imagine Marner, i doubt Tavares would do it, giving the Leafs multiple PLD shifts every game. They don't make the playoffs. Stick 10.9 mill in the press box. Don't see them making the playoffs that way either.
Nylander has an 8 year deal with a NMC. He is only going if he wants to go. He is 100% a guy won't won't tolerate behavior he thinks is unfair. Imagine 8 years of PLD pouting every single shift.
Rielly, two years into an eight year deal. His contract isn't that bad for what he is. He stays. If they take the C from Tavares he could easily be captain.
Dubas tried to leverage his family into renegotiating his contract into the same one he got from Pittsburg shortly after the Leafs pulled his offer. It is a stretch to claim he was fired for questioning the Shanaplan.
Keefe was a zero accountability coach for years. There is no, he tried to make them play this way, he let them do whatever they wanted. It is more likely that the defensive minded players got them to play that way than it is that they suddenly decided to listen to Keefe and do it his way.
If they are moving a player it is most likely Marner. As funny as Utah sounds, I don't think he waives to go there. Maybe Marner to the Kings for PLD. Marner could waive to go to L.A. PLD's NMC is for next season so it would go into effect some time this summer. Maybe to Vegas, Marner for Pietrangelo. Both have NMC so they would both have to agree. I don't think they would want to trade him to an Eastern team but maybe… I sure wouldn't. It just doesn't seem that easy to move Marner. I think Marner will want to go to a playoff team with contention aspirations at the bare minimum. Most of those teams are against the cap. Most would be looking for the Leafs to take a questionable contract back to make the cap work.
Matthews won't be happy if they try to move Marner. A more likely scenario would be to keep Marner and offer Tavares a chance to go somewhere to win a Stanley Cup. Matthews is happy, and the fans are happy when the Leafs give him the "C," something Leaf Nation has wanted for some time. Marner may not get the 10.9m contract he covets, but he'll get a small raise to stay with Matthews, likely with some nice bonuses as incentive.
Everyone keeps pointing the finger at Shanahan. But he's NOT the guy trading or signing players. THAT'S the GM's job. The GM's he's hired have had the Leafs in the playoffs 8 or 9 of the 10 years he's been here. THAT KEEPS HIM HERE! It's not his fault the coaches and players failed in the playoffs. Bab's new this core was flawed for playoffs. Now Keefe knows it! If the GM doesnt give the coach the right players, what's he supposed to do? Keefe does deserve to be fired though. But mainly because his lack of addressing the PP issue that was ongoing before the playoffs even started.
Lily, Marner, Reilly, Keefe, and coaching staff SHOULD be replaced. And whoever keeps Woll fit!!! Fantastic goalie… but definitely not made of Bricks! 🙂
The NMC is not as difficult to navigate as some people may believe. Although there is always a possibility that a player may refuse any scenario presented by the team, there are several approaches that can be taken to persuade a player to accept.
Firstly, you can appeal to the player's pride. Inform them that they are no longer a part of the team's long-term plans. Strip them of their A and explain that their role will be significantly reduced if they choose to stay. No more fist-line minutes. No more PP1 minutes. No more PK minutes at all. You can also mention that staying will only damage their reputation with the fans as they will in the end walk for nothing.
Secondly, you can appeal to their greed. Explain that since they are no longer part of the team's long-term goals, the only way to secure an 8-year deal is to be traded before their free agency. Explain how their numbers will be greatly diminished due to their reduced role and how that will affect free agency offers (Especially with the playoff history).
So glad Ilya Trashonov will never put on a Leafs sweater again. His fans need to go with him to whatever AHL team he signs with.
Like I said during the regular season, right before the playoffs and throughout the series. The Leafs should have went with Woll and Jones.

Might as well accept that there is no easy cure for what ails the Leafs. The only thing that will fix this situation long term is another GTA NHL franchise. The “Greater Toronto’s?” The competition this would bring would force Leafs management to be competitive. MLSE would fight tooth and nail to prevent another team but the irony is that neither team would lose financially in this hockey mad market.

Mike is hurting big time thinking you should keep Keefe just because they put it together for the last three games then they criticize the team for not scoring more goals, so what do you want Keefe is gone. He should’ve been gone after losing to Montreal three years ago.
Keefe is a good coach, but its past the time to move on from him. You can't NOT fire him. There have to be consequences for losing. Treliving should get a pass to remake the team – harder to play against, bigger, tougher defensively … more offence – thats what killed them against the Bruins.
Marner has to go. Period. He is a unique talent and they have to find a deal that brings back assets that advance reshaping the team. Sammy, Brodie, Gio – gone. Tavares is a tough one. He's been a good soldier and is still a useful player, but not worth $11M. Resign to an extension with a hometown discount that lets him finish his career as a leaf. Woll, Matthews, Nylander, Rielly, Nies are key building blocks. Minten and, more importantly, Cowan are coming. There are other pieces on the roster that could still fit (eg Domi, McCabe, etc.), but they're not fixed and immoveable assets. They need a top two and a top four defender, more scoring, and a Goalie to start or back up Woll.
I woud just caution on doing too much, too fast. Blowing up the front office, the bench, and half the roster will be certain disaster. They have some really good pieces. This is about retooling on the fly, not armageddon. Restoring some balance to CAP management and roster construction will really help.

I was just watching a video from Stevie Richards channel, former wrestler. He was talking about concussions and said he will occasionally get bad migraines that could keep him held up for a week. Could this be a post-concussion symptom that Nylander experienced? I didn't know it was migraines that kept him out, but hearing that and what Richards said (and wrestlers arguably get more concussions than hockey players with all the unprotected chair shots they used to take) this sounds like it could be a classic symptom of that. Someone should dig into this more…
