It was a perfectly executed set play, there really is no one to blame.

Pasternak wasn’t Marners guy it’s really as simple as that. However, it’s the playoffs he should have skated back with a lot more effort.

I am not an NHL coach so I don’t know what the Leafs neutral zone setup is, but if it is « let everyone blow right fucking past you and don’t mark a man » we executed it perfectly

He’s not wrong. Rielly had to have Pastrnak there. That doesn’t make Marner’s overall play any less shit though.

FWIW, I don’t really care that much about the OT goal. Sammy could’ve been better but he gave us a chance to win the game. Rielly was pretty mediocre throughout the series but at this point in his career expecting him to be a true number one defenseman that rarely makes mistake is just unrealistic.
I care about the fact that Marner and Tavares were effectively net neutral players (solid defensively, atrocious on offense) when they’re both paid like Top 10 players. Collectively, the two of them had 5 points in 7 games which is just unacceptable when the cap structure of the team relies on them to produce in order to augment the weaknesses in the rest of the roster.
At the end of the day, our depth players and goalies gave us a chance to win series, our stars (and I put Rielly in that bucket) outside of Nylander let us down. I’ll give a pass to Matthews who was obviously not close to 100% but tried to gut it out in Game 7 anyway and carried the offense in Game 2.
Good for Maurice. Regardless of whether or not it was Marner’s fault, it would be classless of any coach to criticize a player on another team who just got eliminated from the playoffs.

Tre gets the message Maurice: Marner to the Panthers, 1:1 for Bobrovsky. Florida beats up on us for the rest of the Matthews era.

Watch Mitch go to Boston next season and serve us our R1 elimination on a silver platter.

Man I loved Maurice as a coach here. Had really shitty teams to work with and got the absolute most out of them. Honestly, if we could steal him, he’d be the perfect coach for this group and I would absolutely run it back with him in charge for sure

Not even a leaves fan but marner had just gotten off the bench while pastrnak was skating at full speed past him. There was no chance of him ever catching him. The pass to pastrnak was also like a miracle pass that 9/10 times wouldn’t have connected. Still, samsonov should’ve played the puck and knocked it off pasta’s stick.

It’s on three people. Marner gets the least of the blame but his contribution should have been just trying to slow Pasta down. That’s all.
Rielly needs to skate much harder so either he wins the race (I see people say it should have been icing but I don’t see that. It’s so close and those are let go all the time). When he doesn’t win the race he has to have some contact whether it’s body or stick to challenge Pasta cutting in front.
Samsonov shouldn’t have been on the goal line. The puck takes the weird bounce and goes towards Sammy. If he’s near the top of his crease he can easily challenge or poke. Instead he sits back and lets Pasta go across him and reacts with the spread eagle save. The problem here is that the key to this save is getting your skate to the post so you take that whole lower portion away. He doesn’t do that either.
Marner is the least blameable of the three but he could have done something. I don’t think he was good offensively at all. Defensively he was good. Maybe he was hurt but we are past those excuses. I also didn’t enjoy Tavares (who contributed as much as he can at this age with hits, faceoffs and better defensive play) carrying the puck over the blue line and then firing a muffin into Swayman. That’s hard for Marner to create much.
Rielly was good defensively but lacked the dynamic offensive play. I trust he will be better but we need another pp option from the point to alleviate some pressure.
Sammy lost me with the Frederic goal. Don’t want to see him again in this market. Hope he excels with less pressure but it can’t be here.

Saw this really great post about what contributed to that goal on Sportsnet (of all places):
