  1. Nylander is better then marner cause he played up to marners level for the first time since he has been here and it was his contract year and he was back to avg Nylander after he signed on top of that Nylander doesn’t play defense an doesn’t skate without the puck he gets benched for it all the time o and marner led the team in points in the playoffs when they made it the furthest with the core 4 so that narrative is a load of shit if you trade Marner over Nylander or Tavares you will be a lottery team in 2 years an AM34 will be out the door .

  2. 1) If TML played 82 games like they meant something, with regular season rules, they should be fighting for first place in the Atlantic.
That might get them an easier first round match up.
That might even have them playing well enough to transition into playoff mode.

    2) Or, you know, they can take the easy way, coast through the meaningless regular season knowing their talent alone will get them into the playoffs, and then HOPE the playoffs go better.

TML DNA is to do #2.

It's not MLSE, not Shanahan, not Dubas, not Keefe, not Marner, not JT, not Samsonov.
It's life in the big city.
See NYR record of futility for comparison.

BTW: Basing what TML should do on the TML fan and media idea that TML is close to winning a cup is crazy. There are about ten teams CLOSER to the cup than TML. Maybe focus on GETTING BETTER before you look for the magic unicorn that jumps you over the teams ahead of you.

  3. I don’t understand why it’s possible, if you at least move one of those over 10 million dollar players, there’s a potential that we won’t make the playoffs?? What about the other 3 players making over 10 million dollars?? They can’t keep the team from missing the playoffs now? Or there’s a possibility? 🤔

  4. An interesting goalie to look at for Toronto would be Chris Driedger. He was healthy (39 GP) and played well (% .917) in AHL this year. Would have been on the Kraken if not for Daccord's miracle run. The guy's only 29 and could be a nice low risk – high reward signing for a goalie who was great in the NHL pre injury.

  5. I think moving Marner remains you best option with changes at D to better support Reilly who I also expect to stay.
I don’t know about conversations behind the scenes but if you moved Marner this year and kept Tavares but the signed him to something very friendly don’t you still want that captain? Tavares at $3M or 2 or less? Who knows but then next year you get that cap flexibility and you still have this guy who wants to be here.

  6. Once again a guy talking about trading JT and Marner thinking it gives us 22 mill in cap space. What team is able to take on a 11 mil cap hit without sending cap back? Not many teams either of these guys would be willing to waive the NMC for. It's one thing to get them to agree to be traded, its another for them to agree to go somewhere that isn't ready to win themselves

  7. I'm surprised (and maybe slightly annoyed) that more people aren't using common sense here… The Leafs have BURIED their best potential up & coming stars as a result of their "over-the-hill free agents + core four'' strategy for the past 6-7yrs. Why not FINALLY give Knies the chance he deserves? Or Robertson? Or McMann? Or Holmberg? Or…etc, etc, etc! Yes yes they've given each of them SOME chances when one or two of their ''core'' players haven't been available, and for the most part we've seen some good things from these ''next generation'' Leafs. But do they get sustained chances? No! Why? Because we're spending all this damn money on a ''Core 4 + Expired Players".

Save the money…get a decent D-man + goalie (for 10-11million), and RIDE THE SEASON by using these players who clearly have the ability to shine if we just let them! Will they do as well as Marner & Tavares? Of course not, but that's not ''proof'' of them being no good. It's just proof that we need to change the culture of this team to reflect a better balance, (both in contract structure AND on the ice talent)… IF the team does reasonably well and is battling for a playoff spot come February, then by all means we'll have extra cap space – let's get some rentals to beef up the team then!

  8. They can get rid of the Tavares, Reilly, and Brodie then build a core defense out of their wages. Mitch can stay but be reevaluated at trade deadline.

  9. I think if the leafs make some right moves. They can make a deep run right now but of Crouse not with the 4 core and Bargain bin players around them.

  10. Look at the Panther's for a example of making big changes! They had a good to great team for a few years, but couldn't do nothing in the playoffs, until they changed a big part of there core

  11. Sure it's a nice theory.. but favourable salary structure is irrelevant if those players only want to go to a contender which they have the control to do. Say what you want about the performances but there is every reason to assume the leafs are in the playoff mix next season – why would JT or Marner agree to go to a bottom feeder looking to barely hit the cap floor when you can walk to the playoffs and have a go? I don't think the leafs are interested in 5-11M in dead cap for the full season and even then looking at most teams (outside of Florida, Carolina or Tampa, still with their own stars to sign) you probably need a 3rd team or an albatross of a contract coming the other way. It feels like they run it back or it's a deadline deal once Vegas loads up on LTIR. Everyone worth waiving a NMC for is going to be cap strapped – including the leafs who likely need every dollar out the door in these potential deals to replace those players by committee.

  12. Big mistake not trading Nylander last summer. His value was never higher. Yeah he has the occasional good playoff game but is one dimensional and is a complete liability on defence. He will never be more motivated than he was this year trying to score a contract and predictably disappeared the day after he got that contract. Marner is overpaid but he is the far better overall player and still has outproduced every other Leaf the last 6 years in the playoffs.

  13. Trade Austin Mathews…yes Austin Mathews. It’s the Bobby Hull /Alex Ovechkin syndrome all over again. Both win 1 cup, both were the leagues most explosive goal scorers. Both disappointed in the playoffs more than dominated. Both teams were predictable on the power play. Both teams relied too much on their sniper than playing as a team.
Mathews will bring a bigger return now than he ever will. The Leafs win more when he isn’t in the lineup. If your best player does not elevate his game in the playoffs then you will probably never win a Stanley Cup, or maybe just maybe one cup.

  14. That 3rd Goalie you were talking about..they vould bring back David Ayers, he's got nhl experience especially against the leafs

  15. Trade Marner for a couple of good 5 million dollar D-Men. Offer Tavares a lifetime contract for a million per year, in exchange for the last year of his current contract.

  16. Resign Domi, idc what anyone says about him, he is a Leaf and he needs some stability to properly become the hockey player he can be.

Bertuzzi will go for the highest bidder, i doubt it will be the Leafs, but they were on paper a good fit.

This team really need to keep doing sneaky good signings/trades like these two then sign mid to long term whoever works out and is willing to talk terms afterwards, that’s how you’ll improve that team not by making spectacular moves.

  17. PLD who has a fairly crap reputation and only wanted to go to two teams was traded for a very nice package. There is no reason to believe Marner can't be traded for a group of guys that will help the team.

  18. Just stop with the if we trade JT and Marner we have another 22mil in cap space. Maybe after whatever we get back in those trades, we have 10 mil in cap space maybe that much. These guys are not waiving to go to a bottom feeder

  19. I have to say, in the beginning of watching you, I couldn’t stand you. But I’ve grown to actually respect you. Even for a Leafs fan

  20. I love Dallaa's drafting and hoe that even if/when Seguin, Pavelski and Benn move on, they have the younger stars whom are already there. Hintz, Robertson, Johnston and odds are, another wave of great prospects are coming for the Stars.

Imagine if the Leafs have kept there picks. Ok, maybe not the best statement but to be in a position to have several draft picks every year, only spend a couple on trades and smart UFA signings…ya.

  21. I like Marner, and Tavares…

But simple arithmetic at this point.

    Trade em both.
for a really good #1 goalie, a really good D man. And another 2 good players (forward and d)

Doable and will get em over the hump.

  22. I am more hurt by the Mitch Marner bashing than losing in 7 to the Bruins. We ended up playing great through all the difficulties and lost by one shot on net, in the last period of the last game. Mitch and I held each other in good standing for YEARS. Always entertaining, always propping up Auston Mathews when needed, always a great penalty killer and passer. Ya, you Marner bashers I can do without. I go with him if he leaves. He is the best leaf since 1967. I have seen them all. It is my truth. I don't support the armchair GMs the media is conjuring out of the fans. Click bait titles attempting to raise fans into a GM position and negative frensy to gain views. And crapping on good players all the while. The Leafs are a good hockey team and as a fan I think the amateur media in Toronto is terrible. Its a good reason to unsub all of it. Which I did.

  23. So glad the person most responsible for the bruin’s 2011 cup, then the current Ranger’s roster, is now the Habs president.

  24. Sounds good…Does this mean you trust Brad after one year not to get fleeced by trading these guys? Question If both these players agreed to much less in their new contracts how much would they have to drop for you to consider this idea. Yes we would be stuck with these contracts for 1 more year so what do you believe would be worth considering this?

  25. If Im Trev, theres ZERO chance im taking the gamble on Gibson and getting that contract off Anaheims hands unless Rako Gudas comes with him.
