maybe but then we would have no goalies
You assume Detroit would have drafted Johnston had they kept that pick. There's no way of knowing how the draft would have played out. Regardless, the Wings goaltending situation has been pretty grim sine Howard retired, and now they at least have two top 10 goalie prospects.
Goalies take longer to develop. I can’t wait for the follow up in a couple years reevaluating this comparison….. when it’s actually fair to do so
They need to trade guys like Larkin away and fully commit to a rebuild
No, we didn't make a mistake moving up to draft Cossa. We wanted and needed a goalie. Good for Dallas for picking that kid, but the goalie was clearly a necessiity, and he's playing pretty damn well for GR in the AHL playoffs.
Since wallstedt was the clear best goalie prospect at the time, and currently looking like a real NHLer, cossa picks looks bad every day passes
You read his draft profile and it’s not nearly as impressive as what he’s become, Dallas did there job in taking a kid who had solid floor, but grew him to the point where his ceiling has become very high. You very well might be talking about Kasper or Danielson in the same breath as Johnston given proper coaching.
Kasper especially could become a big surprise given he got a very good floor now and could easily improve as time goes on
Dallas got the scouts
These videos are lazy.
I am more worried about what SY does drafting AFTER the 1st round.
So far all he has to show for it is Carter Mazur who really will not be a game changer in the NHL.
Last years second round for Detroit resulted in yet another goalie and two more defenders. Brady Cleveland is a huge project.
Goat. 1 for 1 for Marner.
Knies-Cowboy-Johnson 🇨🇦🫡🫡
Detroit never had Wyatt Johnson but will say Yzerman biggest fumble was drafting Filip Zadina over Quinn Hughes though…
Cossa was the correct pick for the future ❤
Franchise altering? How about taking Filip Zadina instead of Quinn Hughes in 2018 draft?
Well prove everyone wrong that cossa was the right pick same with Augustine
if Dallas were really high on Wyatt Johnson then they may have just picked him at 15 if the trade hadn't happened – so not really sure it makes sense to say Dallas's franchise has been made by Detroit making that trade… Now if Detroit had traded back because they desperately wanted extra picks and this allowed Dallas to move up which also allowed them to take Johnson that may be more relevant.
LEGO, you are reaching on this one.
You are so right about Johnston I really only got to see his game
Last nights game announcers were calling his name out whenever he touched the puck, which is often great player
Being a Red Wings fan I appreciate your knowledge thanks
That's not how draft trades work. Detroit would never have gotten Johnston. Dallas was going to take him either at 15 or 28. Since they had somehow confirmed or were confident that Johnston would not be taken by anyone else, they traded back to gain the extra assets. So Johnston likely would not have been there even if Detroit picked 28.
If Detroit made a mistake, then at least 20 other teams did as well.
You can't win it all without top goaltending. Recent winners all had top 10 goalies. The Blackhawks had the 16th. Last team to win with a mediocre goalie was LA.
The pick to be upset about was taking Gustav Lindstrom one pick before Jason Robertson in 2017. The Wings desperately needed a goalie when they took Cossa.
Really not a fan of how Yzerman is building this team, I don't get analysts ranking them as the best or close to prospect pools.
Stevie absolutely made the right move. Our goalie of the future is Cossa and we haven’t had one of those in a very long time.
What kind of asinine video is this? You want Steve yzerman to draft? In order to stop other teams from getting a player instead of rebuilding what he needs for the team and drafting the most Is important Is position in the game. That may be the dumbest possible thought process I've ever heard. Either you're really low on content for Detroit or you.Don't understand what a rebuild is
Mid guy for a star goalie? Oh no
I’d understand your point if Cossa was actually playing in the NHL right now and didn’t look good, but he hasn’t even played a game yet, for all anyone knows he could turn out to be an amazing goalie.
Id still take Cossa ALL DAY LONG , Cossa is gonna b a Vezina trophy winning goalie 100%
yeah another one of yzerman's many fumbles lol
look at all the wings zombies in the comments defending this guy though 😭
Hindsight draft experts are literally the most useless people
imagine trading down and still get the steal of the draft and the guy that might end up being the best player from that draft class as he is already the leader for points from every player in the 2021 draft
They needed a goalie but I just think Wallstedt would of been better
So far, Yzerman's 1st round draft picks have panned out. It's some of the 2nd round draft picks that are more questionable.
We sure could use a right handed center right now
Cossa is Detroit's goalie of the future so Definitly kinda looks like a win/win trade for now but we'll see what become Cossa
Got to give something to get something. Not all draft picks are going to land top players or contributing players.
