There’s a bunch of ways to solve this cap crunch. Off the top of my head:

*1. Cernak goes, easy fix. Stamkos can be re-signed, and we go back to the old system of one good dman on every pairing. Opens up room for a cheap RHD in FA like Carrier. Only barrier is Cernak’s value might not be great + his NTC might have kicked in already.

*2. Tony goes. This is less than ideal, but it makes sense given that Tony has the best trade value of any non-untouchable piece we have, assuming he’s even in that category. We could likely get a decent return for him, roster player + picks. Not thrilled about Stamkos as 2C though.

*3. Sheary is a shanghai shark, and Jeannot is traded for what we can get. That would leave us with about ~9 million to re-sign Stamkos and a few other players. Not exactly the best option given we would be running a skeleton crew without a Stamkos discount.

*4. Worst case scenario, Stamkos goes. JBB has a history of impulsive trades, this one would be the biggest heartbreaker. Don’t even want to think about it.
