  1. Pocklington was Canada's worst businessman and a coke addict. He sold his best asset to pay his debts like a junky always does

  2. You could have easily shopped Messier and maybe one of Anderson, Tikanen, Lowe or Coffey to keep Gretzky. He didn't. So Pocklington deserved all the ridicule. I would have kept Gretzky and Kurri together forever. Just like Trottier and Bossy. best combos ever to play together in the NHL.

  3. I've always wondered why Dave Taylor spent all those years in "Hollywood" and didn't make it into the movies.
He has the perfect stature and countenance for being cast as an Irish gangster.
I would've cast him in such films as "State Of Grace" "Miller's Crossing" and "Road To Perdition" etc.

  4. this deal had to be done for the sake of the league. you couldnt keep the greatest player in the world tucked away in edmonton. this was long before social media and the internet he was almost invisible up in edmonton

  5. Man, this guy def loves hockey, it's no child play to step in durin his era and produce stats like him! He went in like I'll get killed!! And still ended up the greatest one ever!!

  6. If he stayed in Edmonton- they would’ve won 9-10 cups lol but the game would be NOTHING right now. Wayne leaving to expand the game in North America/globally was the right move for generations to come 😢lol

  7. Pocklington decided to (knowingly or unknowingly) do Wayne a Favour by trading him.

Could you imagine the reaction of Edmonton if Wayne were to leave as an unrestricted Free Agent?

  8. Glen Sather's right.
When you read between the lines, there's a lot of things wrong about the Trade/and no one will come right out and say it, BUT they're saying it… you just need to listen.
Sad day for Edmonton, the Oilers, and Wayne.

  9. lemieux better, more complete, more passionate, more helpful player than gretzky….
lemieux = best player in NHL history

  10. I'm in my mid 40s and a Flyers fan. Gretzky beat us twice. How do you hate this guy? Also the dumbest trade ever! Destroyed the Oilers.

  11. Yeah, you shouldn’t have a death threat because you traded an athlete- it sucks yes but it’s sick

  12. I was only a year old (13 Months) at this time. I didn't know the Business side to this until I got to college when I saw this Documentary on TV. Wayne mentioned he was going to be a Free Agent in a year, he was only making 2 or 300k a year. There were players with less talent and skills around the league getting paid more then he was. So with the Oilers struggling to afford Gretzky, I know why they made the Trade. After I saw this, I told my Dad that it looked like the Oilers were a Small Market team at the time. My Dad immediately replied and said, "They Still Are".

  13. Think of 1988… gretzky traded. Little over a month later Ben Johnson gets fd at Olympics ( yes he was using but US set that positive test up it’s all fact ) so a pretty crap era for Canadian sports

  14. He should have explained the situation
The great one became a free agent the highest bidder wins! That sucks!!
Holding on to wayne would have made him more valuable so it suckes more !

  15. The Gretzky trade was one of the worst ever because the 3 first round picks they got in return were used on busts.

What if the Oilers picked good players? It would've been more balanced

1989 they could've had Adam Foote or Olaf Kolzig

1991 they could've had Ray Whitney or Sandis Olzinish

1993 Saku Koivu or Martin St Louis

  16. I’ll always think Pocklington got a bit of a raw deal by taking all the blame when both sides had roles. Pock made the move he had to make because he needed the money, which sucks to hear but is the truth. But he also had no chance to keep Wayne either. Wayne says he wants to stay but he wanted his market value and when he went to LA he signed a deal that paid him 10x what he made in Edmonton. The oilers couldn’t afford that so knowing he was gone either way they made a move to st least not lose him for nothing. It would’ve been cooler if st that time Wayne at least spoke up on his understanding of the realities rather than portraying himself as the guy who got kicked out despite making efforts to stay.

  17. 5:07 – Glen Sather, I thought, should have resigned. Sather was the GM, meaning it was his job to handle trades on Pocklington's behalf. Pocklington undermined his subordinate, making a decision that he probably disagreed with.

  18. Imagine mcdavid wins 4 cups than oilers trade him… Mcdavid better win a cup this year and the next 2… three peat.. If the greatest player doesnt win a cup.. mcdavid is wayyyy better than wayne. Wayne isnt even top 25 all time for me.

  19. The only massive fails the NHL had since the Wayne Gretzky trade were the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes and the Atlanta Thrashers.

The other current Sun Belt teams made at least one Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

  20. I thought that the Oilers traded Gretzky only because Pocklington needed to make up for the money he lost when his other businesses struggled. I didn't think that Gretzky would be a UFA in 1989 or 1990.
