Despite people telling me no whenever I speak on the Blackhawks preferences, this is very realistic. I agree that Demidov is the better player by a solid margin.
BUT…
Few reasons why the Hawks could VERY WELL prefer Levshunov and what’s reflected in the odds:
1. Limited viewings. Hawks including Davidson went to over 20 of Levshunov’s games this year and have a very good relationship with the coach Nightingale.
2. Levshunov is a better skater. Not as explosive but better all around.
3. Belief in their team to develop defensemen and overconfidence in seeing him as a #1 due to their constant drafting based on toolkit and skating.
4. Limited Demidov viewings. Russian scout only went to 7 games. Adores Demidov but limited voices in the room and less total viewings for the org. Brian Cambell was on the big Blackhawks podcast and said video scouting much harder to get a read than in person.
5. Quality of the MHL. MHL is like a very bad CHL team quality in their gold teams, mid level NAHL level for their silver teams. Competition is just weaker and harder to evaluate the translation against men, especially since he got an average of 4 mins a game in his 4 games with SKA.
6. Uncertainty on development next year – simply due to politics, Demidov could be in the MHL again next season since they can’t loan him.
7. Pro readiness. u/dangshnizzle shared a post from Central Scouting that says Levshunov is the most pro ready in the draft, including over Celebrini. While it would be in a limited role, there is a loud minority that does expect him to be competent to play sheltered NHL minutes already.
Do I think we should take Demidov? Yes. Do I see the organization taking Demidov? No.
While I personally see Levshunov as some tiers below where I have Demidov, Levshunov is still a very good player that very reasonably will be top 4 on a team if not top 2.

Demidov may turn out to be amazing, but I do question how his game will translate to the NHL. He looks like he will get rocked in open ice like Kirby Dach against the boards.

-105 is basically a pick’em versus the field, even if Levshunov is the slight favorite at this point Demidov fans shouldn’t overreact to this

Write me down for the +135 on Demi

I don’t know what these numbers mean 😢

Pretty realistic imo. I still think Levshunov is still the favorite to be chosen at 2. But it’s very close and wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Demidov. Look at last year’s draft. I believe Fantilli was considered to be the favorite at 2 but went to 3. Look at Shane Wright who fell all the way to 4 in 2022.

No Dickinson because they don’t want to get burned? There’s some rumors he’s our 3/4th guy. Definitely more likely than Helenius.

No odds for trading the pick?

Unless a team really wants one or the other and they pay accordingly for #2, I say grab Levshunov. An NHL ready D man that can skate and shoot? Yes please.

We should revisits all these conversations after the Russian Florida festivities.

Yea I think you’re right. NCAA should be the pick. But why is Dem ranked so high while playing in the MHL? The scouts know. And I feel like I’d rather take the risk for him at 2 then lose him. Drafting a player could go anyway. Especially this draft.
