The only silver lining to this is we won’t have to read posts from smug readers jumping down a responder’s throat: “You can’t make that trade because Joe Shmoe is a UFA who is owed $7.2 million over 3 years and the Yeti are already $1.6 million over the Cap and Jesse Jellohead would have to be moved and blah blah blah blah blah hey Boston you need a new GM look how smaht I am my boy’s wicked smaht…”
This just further confirms that despite this being the age of information, stupidity is still an epidemic
For me, this stuff just reinforces why I'm so unenthusiastic about the NHL like I was when I stopped watching back in 2013. Between the off ice nonsense from everyone involved, the national coverage being the worst I've seen in any major sports league, and ticket prices soaring league wide, I have no enthusiasm for the league, even despite the on ice product being as good as it is. I think I'm done planning NHL trips until Bettman is gone. Minor league hockey is cheaper and more fun anyway.
I’m one of those fans that lived on capfriendly during the “signing/trading” season, before that site I used nhlnumbers, which I think was taken over by puckpedia…
In my youth, before the internet I was a hockey card stat nut 😂…
Salary is a way to keep fans involved during the summer… speculation and excitement of moving players is part of a hardcore fan’s lifestyle 😉
NHL needs to get a grip on that fact!
🏒
Teams use capfriendly to manage their own cap. This is well known.
Name any other North American League that would do something this stupid. MLB and NBA all allow this information to fans because it helps you follow along with the front office on how teams are constructed.
So they basically hate how their most dedicated fans are invested in this sport. They also hate how we watch hockey and want us to watch it a certain way, they want multi billion dollars coming into the league, they want us to not follow the salary cap even though garbage Bettman + owners were the ones that wanted it and they want us to give them all our money but also not be invested in the actual sport. So basically immature, pissy and petty kids are in charge of the league where they want everything their way. I want a fairy unicorn that craps gold bars and diamonds but we don't always get what we want. Absolutely insane.
hey, you forgot under "Too young to remember" – "Leafs win Stanley Cup" 😉
Wow, that's so fvcked up. If we can't discuss contract values at the games, then we are going to complain more about $18 beers at Canes games.
Sports should be for the fans by the fans. Leagues need to realize that passion from the fans is more important than the dollars they are worth. In Germany, all soccer/football teams are required to be fan-owned. This places fans over profits. When you see the culture and passion in Germany it makes me wonder what would be possible in North America if fans were considered fans and not consumers. In some soccer teams in MLS you see this but rarely. As a fan who will live and die for my team, the NHL's corporate culture really upsets me and I hope we as fans can push for a change.
"Im not being paid by the NHL." Sounds like something someone who works for the NHL would say. 🧐
If the NHL doesn’t like cap friendly why did cap friendly operate with several nhl teams in who allowed cap friendly to have access to some of this information?????? Your video makes no sense when you consider that well known fact
I really think your lack of knowledge on this topic showed here and it’s sad because I feel usually you get more info before you make such a video
You were watching The Daily Show, right?
If the nhl doesn’t want us to have this info why do they post on their own website players deals when they are signed???? The reason the caps bought it is because it’s an excellent resource and they wanted access to their coding, system setup, etc etc so basically those guys now work for the caps in their finance department
If the nhl wanted to shutdown these sites permanently they would. They don’t and you saying that is a downright lie and opinion that is based nowhere but your brain and the brains of those who don’t understand
The more I see these NHL mess ups I further believe the theory that the NBA let Bettman go to the NHL to torpedo the growth for their benefit
We are irritated with the bozos running the league. One of the greatest sports in the world and it’s run by a bunch of clowns. THG is being respectful in spite of the nonsense. Transparency is a must from not only the league but all other major sports.
Losing public access to Capfriendly is genuinely a downgrade for all of NHL fandom.
Capgeek founder died from cancer is the reason why that went away
I love that the Canadian dream is to get all the maple syrup 🍁
I find the tiiming of this 'Cap Friendly' buyout interesting.
This news squeaked out early in the hockey media maelstrom of the annual Stanley Cup hoopla period, with the imminent reality of seemingly significant increases in the salary cap coming up in the second half of the decade (starting this season), and at a time when independent hockey podcasts and analysts are growing in both number and technical sophistication (their content often assisted and augmented by the kind of in-depth cap-related info that 'CF' specializes in).
Clearly, the owners and Gary Bettman, do not like the propect of a passionate, well-informed fanbase out here having access to information or tools that can better inform their enjoyment and knowledge of pro-hockey in North America. Inforned fans — and journalists, podcasters, etc — are in a better position to ask better, sharper questions AND attract an audience of their own, over time, when they can access and utilize such options. And the NHL can neither control that process nor make money from it, a dual reality that it just cannot abide, given that large piles of 💲, have, for most if not all of its' existence, easily eclipsed developing and growing the great game of hockey not just in Canada and the USA, but all around the world, as its' seeming raison d'etre.
If fans really want to change the NHL's avaricious, self-centered mindset in such matters, then send it a stiifer message: STOP buying its' overpriced tickets, merchsndise, etc, and support channels like this one and current and future independent alternatives to 'Cap Friendly' with your money, instead.
Just more ways to hide the dirt and the cheating that goes on in the nhl
Oh well, its definitely not the end of the world like some people are making it out to be. News flash, the NHL is a multi billion dollar company, nothing more, nothing less
Vegas punching air right now
Cap and salary information in general isn't really anyone's business. It's not public business, despite the fact it had been. Now, people will fall back to the "they're public figures/I pay their salaries" self-inflation argumentation, but the frequency of dumb arguments doesn't make them better.
It’s easy to forget that the league is still a business. And it’s easy to forget that the owners aren’t the only ones who care about that bottom line, the players do too. However, I think there is genuine value in the engagement things like Capfriendly being to the league/game. These things are what keep people around, people who spend money
It’s very frustrating that the league doesn’t want us to know more than “buy merch and watch games.” That is so bare minimum fandom. How far from apathy is bare minimum?
Sucks that cap friendly is going. Puck pedia is a decent alternative, another one could be Elite Prospects – although with the latter there will be a bit of work involved to check cap compliance as it has pretty basic info on there.
8:21 I'm of course biased but I still maintain Tom Wilson's hit on Oskar Sundqvist had minimal head contact. The head certainly wasn't the main point of contact. That 20 game suspension was an overreaction. It was almost certainly the whiplash that caused the concussion.
Most of the calculations and sec page set up isn’t remarkable and should be doable for others.
I was always absolutely shocked how they had the contract info that the other teams didn’t seem to have!
Where did they manage to get it and so fast??!?
Apparently, there are only a handful of teams that already have an internal system in place that shows info like capfriendly. The rest of the teams are scrambling to set something up. Instead of creating one, the Capitals just purchased capfriendly.
How is this inside information? The individual player contracts, and the overall salary cap, are all public information. All CapFriendly did was aggregate it.
Knowing how much cap space my team has affects how likely many of my favorite players are to return next season, which trades are likely to work, and our odds of getting coveted free agents. These are things that people who love these teams will want to know.
So Shannon watches John Stewart. Nice…..
