What happened to players like Lomberg and Hathaway are one of the reasons I disliked Treliving’s approach. We’d have decent depth players who we developed internally and let them walk in free agency, waive them, or trade them for nothing, so we could have an aging veteran filling the role at a far higher cap hit.
Next offseason I expect a GM (possibly Treliving) making this mistake with Bennett. They will give him a contract he can’t live up to (5 years at $5.5 million), he will be a third line player, and perform as well as a depth player they give up for nothing who plays at half the AAV.
