Will listen to tonight when my ears are available. Just wanted to quickly share Bob Hartley’s take on Laine when asked if he would take him on his team.

He said : « No, not at all. I would ask my GM ‘Is he a good hockey player or a talented one?’ I want good hockey players. A guy like Laine MIGHT work out on a team with a very solid culture and leadership, like Pittsburgh. But for a young team, it’s a bad idea. »

His last full season was in 2018 then in 2019 he played 68 game and since then he is under 60 game played per season while he’s a good player I don’t think we want more players who are always injured on the team and honestly I don’t think he would be able to deal with the media and fans here

I’ve beem against this idea since it has been mentionned on this sub. The only reason you want Laine is to accelerate the rebuild on a guy that has so many ifs on him. He is not the answer at all.

We’ve all seen Ottawa that went for who is available to accelerate theirs and it went terrible. Let’s be patient please…

Yes I’d do it if the price was right. Only 2 years left at this contract and we can potentially get a guy who can score 40+ a year.

If the cost isn’t high and we miss on our other targets, I could see it.

Worst case scenario, you could move on from him in two years, best case, you get another top 6 piece who’s in his mid/late twenties.

With salary retained by CBJ, I think it’s worth a Monahan-esque gamble. His ceiling is high, but has he already hit it?

CC – Suz – Slaf on the 1st, then Newhook – Dach – Laine on the 2nd seems like a pretty legit top 6

Would we load up one PP unit with the 1st line + Laine + Matheson/Hutson or try 2 balanced units?

Laine’s value hinges on CBJ’s willingness to retain. If they’re adamant about not retaining, then there may not be a lot of interest around the league.

The teams I see with cap space and a need for Laine would be us, Preds, Ducks, Seattle, Utah

  8. So, if not him, who would conplete the Dach trio? Newhook and?

  9. JeanJacquesDatsyuk

He would get slaughtered by the media

Im not going to pretend I know why Laine needed to step away as I don’t think it’s fair to the player but if he had trouble in Columbus then how will he survive in the pressure cooker of Montreal

  11. Grossepotatoe

There’s honestly a possibility to either accelerate or completely derail the rebuild with a luxury bargain bin. If we can get Laine for fairly cheap and Dubois gets bought out, starts his redemption arc with a 2-3 year deal in Montreal on the cheap and we make a couple wise trades and draft picks, we could be a force very quickly OR regret it forever. I’d roll the dice

Solid yes for me. Even without salary retain. Guy is without a doubt a very, very talented player. He’s only 26 years old. He has every motivation in the world to work out whatever problems he has and earn a new NHL contract.

    Habs fans are so funny…

As far as I understand, we’re looking for a winger who:

    – Is between the ages of 17 and 27, although ideally 21-25.

    – Is a free-agent or can be obtained via trade with our current disposable assets.

    – Is above 6’0″, although ideally over 6’2″

    – Is a proven NHL player, can produce consistent offense, at least 0.75ppg. Ideally a proven playoff performer.

These guys exist, but they aren’t cheap. Who is the ideal candidate?
