guys – once 91 is down to 5MM in ‘25-26… with the cap growing – it kinda becomes a non-issue. mitch is an insanely good player. our playoff woes have been because of a lack of team identity and chill coaching. either way, its in mitch’s hands.
Marner or no Marner irrelevant….. The NHL is rigged with a salary cap that means teams like Toronto and other Canadian teams as well as high tax states can never complete long term. Zero chance. As an example the Florida teams have a 15 to 17 million dollar higher Cap based on after tax dollars. That is like a free top flight goalie, a top 2 defenseman and also top 6 forward. Impossible to compete against that. The Leafs will never win a Stanley Cup. A Luxury tax similar to MLB is the only fair solution in the NHL.

Keep Marner at $11.5mil? Yes. Keep him at $11.5mil pls one dollar? No. Match Nylander’s contract and I’d be ok with it. Cap is going up steadily now. JT comes off the books after next season. It shouldn’t be about Stanley Cup or bust all in one year. It will likely require 2-3 more years of tinkering plus additional salary cap added etc for the Leafs to honestly develop a Cup contending roster. They aren’t close to being a Cup contender right now. A Marner trade won’t change that.

Whatever happens, if we trade or keep him, I think we can agree that it is not ideal for this carnival of leaks and rumours regarding his negotiations to be played out in the media by his agents and certain reporters. If Marner really cares about being a leaf he would take the Nylander approach and have his negotiations be very secretive.
