Pretty bummed. Was excited for him to be Our Guy, especially with that retention.

I’d prefer the 1st draft pick over an old middle tender. Saros worth a first but markstrom isn’t

I think we dodged a bullet.

This move is comparable to picking up a grenade to throw it back at the person that threw it at you.
Hopefully it doesn’t blow up in your face, but it probably will.

Pretty good deal for both teams I think, more so for the Devils.
NJ needed this. They desperately needed a real goaltender and there are so few available. They also didn’t give up anything crazy.
Kevin Bahl is still only 23 with some upside but is more of a third-pairing D. Something the Devils have a ton of. They keep their high pick this year and trade their first round pick next season where they expect to be better. They also have most of their picks so they aren’t left hurting for picks. Devils kept all their great prospects.
Markstrom comes in at slightly over $4 M which is reasonable and they didn’t really have to add much for the two years retention. Markstrom has some questions about him for sure but he is so much better than everything else they have and better than everyone in free agency.
I feel like Calgary could have had a slightly better offer maybe with an extra pick or a slightly better player BUT getting a first round pick and a cheap D is good enough for their current situation. They don’t need Markstrom anyways, take what you can get.

Chief Keefe primed to win the Jack Adams next year. Even average goaltending will be huge for that team, and they have a lot of positive regression candidates and young guys starting to pop. If Markstrom is halfway decent that’s a dangerous team.

Good trade for both teams imo. Allen/Markstrom is a pretty good tandem

We are trading for Jake Allen mark my words

Keefe smirking today

Calgary is a trainwreck. So sad. They are my second team.

theres no way y’all actually wanted markstrom on this team…

So, the only thing that held up this deal getting done at the deadline, was retention?
That’s such a basic return for a goalie – when they cited Calgary not being able to make the « money work » it sounded like a much bigger deadline deal

Just because it’s Treliving eh… Can’t tell me the Leafs didn’t/wouldn’t offer more.
That’s like getting bent over in a trade because you didn’t want to make one in your own division.

Calgary doesn’t want to deal with the leafs cause they still butt hurt over Tre leaving so they are basically charging a leafs tax just like at the trade deadline on why we didn’t get Tanev or zadorov. The price paid would have been higher for us. But a first and a 23 year old d man for a declining 36 year old goalie? That’s a steep price.

Great deal for NJD. Calgary fleeced again.

I would’ve done Liljegren and a 1st. The problem with having poor defensive depth is 3rd pair guys get top 4 minutes and opportunities. So Liljegren will have the counting stats to get a higher arbitration amount than his play deserves, just based on volume. Kind of like why Sammy got Swayman money when they went to arbitration in the same year. They heavily weigh role. So maybe you trade him if you know you’re not going to qualify him because you’d be unable to afford his arb amount. It goes without saying, there’s no way you can afford Liljegren at more than $3M AAV if Marner is still on the team.

Top 10 protected first round pick and a 3rd pairing defensemen *with* 31% of Markstrom’s salary retained?
Pretty underwhelming trade for Calgary.
GhostlyCasper2024
After the year New Jersey had in net, I don’t think this will be the answer.

Two truths from a Leafs fan in Calgary:
– Marky would have quite likely fixed a lot of what’s wrong with the back end of this team.
– We were never going to get him. End of. Full stop.
