I wanted Kuemper to succeed here and he actually was solid his first year here but his struggles his 2nd year cemented his fate.

Didn’t think the Caps would find a taker for DK…but we’re taking on one of the worst contracts in the league. To say PLD has been a disappointment, is an understatement. Dude built like a truck but plays soft. Hope he can re-find his game.

  3. No_Departure102

So we basically traded a shitty contract for an even shittier contract? wtf, Maclellan?

  4. BigHunt_02

Did CapFriendly help with this trade? Good lord that is a terrible trade

  5. alcatrazhero18

Is it too early to start drinking? JFC

  6. tyreeselol

Didn’t think we could trade Kuemper and be the team to get fleeced

  7. so what’s everyone thinking on a backup? bring in Shep? sign someone?

  8. BurnerAccount374

Dubois has an extremely cheap buyout until June 24. Cap hit would be $1.1m per year until 2038. Don’t rule it out.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Kuemper straight up sucked and was unusable, and he’s signed for another 3 years at 5.25 per year. Meanwhile PLD is at least a 45-65 point per season guy and can slide into the top center spot. It was our biggest need last season and we just solved it. How is this a bad trade for us?

On the one hand, I can see some sense. PLD was a bad match in LA, he was fighting for 3C even before Byfield started to emerge this year. He could be a clear 1C here. Maybe that gets his ass into gear.

On the other hand, he’s a third-time reclamation project who hasn’t played like a 1C anywhere along the line and has a truly awful contract for that level of production. Not like Caps really need to worry about cap space, but the best case scenario is being in the murky middle of the league for years, and the worst is his contract getting in the way of new deals for upcoming talent in 5-6 years.

I get why people are shocked. I get why people don’t love this trade.

However, it’s definitely not as bad as people are making it out to be.

PLD has 7 years on his contract.
Kuemper had another 3 on his.

The effective difference is ~3 million extra for a 1C instead of a backup goalie. For those three years, after that his NMC becomes a 15-team NTC, then 10-team NTC. 8.5 mil will be nothing with how the cap is going up.

    It’s a high-risk, high-reward play.

If he can find his offensive prowess again, this is actually a huge win.

    Ovie – PLD – Willy

All 6’3″+, all 220lbs+. Gonna be a heavy fucking line.

Carbs got Mantha going, maybe he can get PLD going too. Maybe I’m just coping, but I’m cautiously optimistic about this.

  13. Frozenpucks

PLD made it one year in LA. He’ll make it one in Washington too.

I’m all for finding a taker for Kuemper’s contract, and I know Dubois is not very old. He’s also quickly worn out his welcome in 3 different cities the last few years.

Hopefully, Carbury can motivate him and sprinkle some magic dust like he did with Mantha.

  15. tokishoki

My gut reaction is that the Front Office is seeing this as we’re trading a backup keeper with a bad contract for a 1st / 2nd liner who has potential to fill, and they think the extra 2 years and $3M/ year will be worth it.

It’s hard to get excited now but you just never know. There’s a great player in there from his Columbus and Winnipeg days; let’s hope we get that guy back and motivated.

  16. ClassicalBrainCells1

Guys… you don’t just rob teams when getting rid of your bad contracts…

We get rid of our problem, and we try to fix someone else’s problem or we’ll be at this conversation in a couple years…

But yeah the overcorrection mistake of getting off Sammy and vitek is done now…

  17. Content-Style-8705

I’m going to be delusional and say Carbery can fix him. Mantha 2.0?

  18. goodleaf6

Well I hope coach carbs can turn this guys lazy ass into the player he’s paid to be. Judging from what he got out of this team this season, I’m a teeny-tiny bit optimistic it can work out.

  19. Heavy-Research978

LOTS of potential. Maybe playing with OVI will ignite some of that. If he has a Strome like resurgence it will be a steal

  20. CWest540

I’ll try to be optimistic, but it’s not exactly what I was hoping for. I do think DK getting a fresh start and giving HS and CS a chance to play is probably better for the organization overall.

I do wonder if them taking on this kind of contract gives any hints as to what Oshie might be thinking. If he retires, I think the risk/reward on this a lot looks a lot better.

Best case scenario PLD returns somewhat back to form. Worst case, we have another Kuzy situation on our hands.

  21. nerdcoffin

This trade is actually genius. If it doesn’t work out. Dubois is a perfect tank commander and leader for the future.

  22. JessKingHangers

This is fantastic. Did you guys all forget how bad Keumper was the last 2 seasons?

Did you also forget that we lost our 1C and 2C? How are any of you mad?

  23. BruceTheSpruceMoose

Okay, the cap hit is obviously brutal, but this is exactly the type of player management has said they’re looking for. Young, potentially impactful, didn’t cost futures.

The cap hit sucks tremendously, but we’re out from under Backstrom, Kuzy, Mantha, and now Kuemper’s contracts. We DO have some money to gamble with and I guess that’s what we’re doing.

  24. TheHeftymanzell

Awful contract and he may be a locker room cancer, don’t like this at all

  25. DaniCapsFan

So are the Caps going to bring up Shepard, bring up Stevenson, make another trade, or try to acquire a free agent?

  26. YellowMarkerIsGreat

Dubois is going to be an even more overpaid Kuznetsov
