If you don’t like this trade I honestly don’t know what to tell you. We just got a legit starting goalie on a reasonable contract. It’s our biggest position of need and we didn’t have to spend that much.

We clearly explored the elite options and they weren’t there. After that, this is really solid business and exactly what this team needs.

Edit: And it’s 30% retained let’s fucking gooooooo

  2. beastboy4246

I don’t love losing Bahl but I’m guessing Fitz is looking for more d upgrades and moving Bahl was a way to get it?

  3. Soquid-Snake

IM SAD ABOUT BAHL BUT THIS IS NICE

  4. TomatoNoah

W we keep pick 10 and bet on us making the playoffs. Losing Bahl sucks but it’s definitely worth it imo

  5. ScrewOff_

    Anyone mad about this…

We either keep the 10th and acquire a bomb ass dman to replace him or we trade for a bomb ass dman to replace Bahl.

Keeping the 10th is huge here.

And keeping Holtz with his potential regardless of what people want to say about him, if he turns it up next season thats a massive boost for the team.

This trade gives us options and I love it for that reason.

  6. AGOEsLois

Yeah I’m fine with that, I think we’ve potentially reached almost ceiling on Bahl.

  7. mustachiolong

Bahl was at most going to be a bottom pairing Dman. We also kept the top 10 pick allowing us to draft someone with high potential or make other upgrades? This is actually pretty fair all around.

Edit: And 30% retained? This honestly is a great all around trade.

  8. Dustmopper

Just win the cup this year and that 2025 first is garbage, ha ha

  9. stanley_g00dspeed

This is a great trade for us.

  10. brokowska420

The 1st in 2025 is okay if we make the playoffs and Markstrom saves us. Bahl for Markstrom is fair. This is all pending on him playing at a +.905 level. I’m trying to be optimistic…

  11. OgreUAsshole

This is way better than anything involving the 10th pick

  12. NYDevilsFan

We do have Hatakka (also left-handed shot like Bahl) who showed promise last season being able to hold it down defensively.

  13. DavidPuddy666

Look at it this way – we gave up a mediocre defenseman we didn’t really have room for and a 2025 1st (ie not this year’s 10th overall) for 2 years or so of stable goaltending while our window is open. We bought ourselves two years of competitive hockey to find a long term starting goaltender.

  14. QuellCharms

Wow I love this trade, what a great job by Fitz here

  15. Bahl is just a guy and the pick is protected so it’s about as good as you could ask for I guess

  16. I don’t mind this much. It’s a fair price. Losing Bahl isn’t the worst considering our young defensive prospects. Would’ve loved Ullmark or Saros but Markstrom will do

  17. BurnerAccount374

There are a half dozen teams who feel like a Markstrom would make them contenders. At his cap hit, there was gonna be a line out the door at the draft and over the summer. Winning that race without trading Pick 10, Holtz or Casey is a massive W.

Edit: and getting Calgary to retain 1/3 salary? Insanity.

  18. TheNightRain68

Pick is top 10 protected too. Not a bad trade tbh. Markstrom wasn’t my first choice but still better than whatever we had last year lol. Now I guess we’ll be hunting for a LD.

Edit: flames retain so we only have a $4.215 million cap hit

  19. FlyingScubaShark

Glad to keep our pick this draft. This is a stacked draft for defensemen so this helps open us up to drafting BPA rather than on need. Ideally we’ll be picking in the 20’s…or 30’s next draft and have other D-men in our system and via FA that can fill Bahl’s shoes. Solid trade.

  20. jerseygunz

Well, I’m just gonna say it…… we are so back 😈😈😈

  21. TheWeisGuy

If we kept the 10th I have a feeling there’s more big game hunting to be had. I wonder what else fitz has planned

  22. coach673

This is a good move. The pick will be low after next year. Bahl is just a guy and young defense is where we have depth. 30% retained and it’s a stopgap. Daws or Akira have a chance to develop in a year or two and can hopefully be the guy. If not we go searching again. Goalies are a crapshoot and this is vastly better than what we rolled out last year.
I would have preferred to get Saros or Ullmark, but I feel we are giving up next to nothing here. Either of those guys would probably have cost, some combination of Mercer, Holtz, Casey, 2024 10 overall. To stopgap the goalie problem and not give up any of that is a win in my book.

  23. Johnborkowski

    Two Jake’s in net!

    Nobody decide to retire please.

  24. MartysBetter29

I question where the Devils toughness on the back end is going to come from. Need a FA or a big trade now to fill that hole.

One of the physically weakest d-cores in the league just got significantly weaker.

    Currently on the roster:

Hamilton Marino L. Hughes Nemec Siegenthaler

  25. NoFearsNoTears

30% retained. Only paying 4.1 mil for marky the next 2 years. 1.9 to allen. We’re in a better goalie situation now everybody. Stay positive. We don’t have to run our goalies into the ground and can keep these guys fresh all year. And it only costs 6 million combined

  26. njdevils901

Considering how many goals we score, even a 16th ranked goaltender in the NHL would get us into the playoffs

  27. erikruff8

Woah that is a hell of a deal. This is a massive underpayment. Before I saw the details of the trade I was afraid of an overpayment. This trade is absolute win.

  28. Remote_Presence_1346

Yeah now Bahl is gonna be the greatest Dman in the league.

  29. quantum_monster

Me at first « This is amazing but now we have more holes in the D to fill »

Me when I see 30% retained « HOLY SHIT I LOVE YOU FITZ »

  30. Midnight_Mustard

For Fitz to publicly say 10OA is in the table and STILL keep it in house is amazing

  31. hotstickywaffle

This is really as good as you can ask. Bahl is replaceable, and that pick should absolutely not be a good one, and now we have a starter on a good deal. And we still have the 10th this year if we want to take a swing on a defenseman, or more likely just add another good prospect to our pool.

  32. tECHOknology

FINE KEEP PICKLES AND SHANGO I’M NOT HURT.

I wonder if Fitz alluded to Shango when asking for a back scratch.

  33. Batfleck666

Next year’s 1st rounder will be the 32nd overall….so, good trade.

  34. LaHondaSkyline

Bahl was the odd man out because he never wanted to use his body and be physical enough, despite being the largest skater on the ice 90% of his minutes.

  35. TediousSpark

So I was hoping that Fitz would go for a decent (not star) younger goaltender so that 1) we don’t have to do this again in a couple of years, 2) we’re not relying on a tandem of two older guys, 3) we have more assets to put toward our D and some physical players.

That said, this seems like a solid stopgap to help us breathe a little easier when the puck is in our zone while not losing any massive pieces. I liked Bahl a lot, but like others have said, his size wasn’t being used for physicality and I’m not sure how high his ceiling is. And I totally get not wanting to go for a mid goalie with the hope of developing them into something more. We’ve had such bad luck (or bad Rogalski) trying to do that the last several years.

If Bahl breaks out in Calgary, that’d make me very happy for him, and we still have Dougie, Nemo, Luke, Hatakka, etc. I’ll take it.

Oh, and it’s The Two Jakes in net now. So that’s fun.

  36. CavCord141

Fitz has made NJ a destination, names waiving NTCs. Big free agency signings. These are things NJ wasn’t capable of in the past. While the direction may still be a little fuzzy this franchise is absolutely in much better shape than before he took over.
