  1. I mean, I hope. But I’m skeptical. 4th team in 4 years and not even 25. 7 years left on a massive contract. I hope Carbury can work his magic and somehow get this guy to buy in every night. Skill and size is there with PLD, but the effort and physicality isn’t. Something has to give here.

Are there any examples of players with these sorts of character red flags turning things around and behing halfway worth it.

  3. I have a good feeling about this trade and i have no idea why

This trade killed my faith in our front office. We just traded for the worst contract in the NHL with a guy who’s demonstrated on multiple teams that his best playing days are behind him.

  5. They had to take the gamble, they desperately need a playmaker who can be a 1C or 2C. Caps were pathetic offensively last year, you have to roll the dice a bit to get better.

  6. I’m trying to put this together for the last day.

So they need a Center, moved a goalie with a big contract (and we aren’t going to play) for a Center with a big contract. Center has issues but could be moved to a team with cap for draft picks or take the gamble and keep him to see if there is production. Or you take him to the deadline, hopefully he comes in at where he is moveable.

I don’t hate the trade, cause we have almost no use for Kuemper in our current goalie situation. But PLD has been an issue everywhere.

Only person I can think of right now is Evander Kane, and that is a stretch and an “in-the-moment” pick.

Here’s the thing. Prior to this trade, we didn’t have a 1C. Tt is questionable if we even had a 2C (Strome vs McMichael if he takes a big step?). There is one goal for this team in the next two years: get Ovie the goal scoring record. He needs a playmaking center. For all his faults, PLD is a solid playmaking center.

How do you get a solid playmaking center? Hopefully internally, but Strome didn’t workout as a great playmaker for Ovie last year. McMichael is solid, but it is unlikely he will become a 1C.

Free agency? Well look who is available. Elias Lindholm already turned down $49M/7. His contract will be bigger than PLDs, but he is 4 years older. Chandler Stephenson, Max Domi, Sean Monahan? They aren’t going to be 1C. Stamkos? He is the most skilled free agent center, but no chance he comes to Washington.

So then that leaves trading for a guy that can help Ovie. And playmaking centers aren’t freely available. The options are extremely limited and often expensive. To get a playmaker in a 1:1 deal for a player that is also underperforming their contract is a pretty solid move. Is there risk? Absolutely. But the risk is moreso in the post-Ovie world, when the salary cap will be higher and we will be in more of a true rebuild. For the next 2 years, PLD won’t win us a cup, but he helps our team be competitive while providing Ovie with a playmaker

  8. I feel like I read this article every year with the team and GM name filled in like Mad Libs.
