PLEASE NOW, Return the Jets team and player stats that Arizona has to the current Winnipeg Jets where they belong.
What is Arizona Coyotes? The do not have a coach, they do not have an area, for X sake they do not have any players/…What team do they talking about? Why would anyone pay a dime to Merulo for the name Coyotes…. New team and owner can call it Phoenix Road Runner… lol
This should not be a surprise to anyone. He was given $1B, considerably more than what the franchise was worth, with no real incentive to build an arena. If he didn’t get it done, he keeps the $1B
Give Utah the coyotes branding. If they’re not going back to Arizona, there’s no point in folding the branding.
Still 5 years, he owns the rights. He can change his mind or someone can buy it. NHL will not let it go…..However in 10 years downtown arena with the Suns
Then NHL entered into Yotes/Utah relocation knowing that Meruelo wasn't going to be able to get an arena built, and found a way to move into a market without all the competition of having MLB and NFL teams nearby. Reality has now hit Meruelo and he realizes that he just needs to walk away.
I said it in your last video. He was going to sell the rights to the team eventually I just didn’t believe he would give up this quickly.
A billion dollars, or continued headaches in Arizona….. pretty easy choice. They clearly stated the deal isn't transferable and even limited the amount of partnership he could obtain. It was setup to fail
I don't blame him. He tried for years. The Tempe voters turned their backs on the team and now it's gone.
Expansion down the road. Welcome the the NHL, the Arizona Phoenix!
That was an exhaustive attempt. Almost as good as OJ heading off to find the criminal.
This seems far too contrived. The question is who is the puppet master to make sure Meruelo doesn't continue?
To clarify about the Arizona Coyotes regarding the reactivation process, and this is just based on my understanding of the details.
Since only Alex Mereulo was granted the right to “reactivate” the franchise, no other owner including the NHL can legally do it.
Therefore, the Arizona Coyotes, who already lost the on-ice product to Utah, are now legally a defunct franchise.
The next time hockey returns to the Valley-if ever and I hope it does come back but who knows-it’ll be a traditional expansion team with a new franchise.
No matter if the Coyotes brand ever returns or not.
Wasn’t he locked in as owner for maybe 10 years beyond the arena opening? I remember this from the conference in AZ.
Thanks for the great coverage I hope Craig is on soon if not today .
Fisher next!
Owning a minor league team doesn't mean much because once the contract is up Utah can just make them disappear. Honestly Arizona and Meruelo deserve each other and I hope they sue each other into bankruptcy but I'm glad the NHL no longer has to look like an amateur league because of AZ and AM.
He's the John Fisher of hockey. #sell
I think the NHL knows how important the Phoenix area market is and eventually wants a team back there
It seemed to me that the NHL set out serious steps, that were very clear, that needed to be followed by the owner. It also seemed to me that the NHL did not believe the owner would actually follow through. If the league believed in him, they would not have forced him out to begin with. This owner likes easy money. When things get difficult, he checks out. This should be good news for anyone that actually wants hockey back in AZ.
i think im ok with no nhl team here anymore. the political corruption dripped down to youth hockey like you wouldnt believe. hope there is no more of that.
I don't blame Alex Meruelo for walking away. I don't know if the State and Local politicians don’t want the NHL in the Valley or if they just don’t want Meruelo to have one. The difference between the political leadership in Salt Lake City area vs the Greater Phoenix Valley has been striking. In SLC they have been falling over each other to help secure the site and development, but here in AZ the have been falling over themselves to be the reason why it won’t work. Also I love how people keep calling him an idiot, I wish I was dumb enough to be worth $2B and then have the NHL pay me an additional Billion dollars on top of that. I don’t blame him at all, I’d take that billion dollars and go do something less aggravating, heck, maybe buy a stake in the Las Vegas A’s. But than again, maybe he should team up with the Smith Group and draw the Diamond backs to SLC – now that would be funny.
I'm only here for the blinking lights.
In April, Alex Meruelo sold for $1 billion the hockey operations that in March were worth $500 million. Somebody made off like a bandit.
New ownership has one major advantage over Meruelo in securing an arena deal for the team: no burned bridges in Glendale. The arena in Glendale isn’t perfect, but it’s an arena, and potential new team ownership isn’t Alex Meruelo.
Following you through this AZ story. Just subbed
Hope they keep it at 32 teams until they are ready for 36 teams. 33 is a bad choice
Thanks NHL for officially killing off the OG Winnipeg Jets.. should have just "relocated" them instead of this Cleveland Browns nonsense.
I think the ASLD didn't believe Meruelo would've been able to fulfill his promise to finance and build the district project he proposed, so it wanted to buy more time to get another qualified bidder to build another development on that site and used the lack of the appropriate permitting as an excuse to delay the auction. Another possibility: Meruelo got cold feet re. building that district after he sold the team, so he didn't bother initiating the permitting so he'd have an excuse to bail.
Wonder of Meruelo will sell the Roadrunners to Smith since they are now the AHL affiliate of the Utah hockey team…?
He had enough of the demoKKKrats trying to rob him and made the smart decision. Ever since the election theft of 2020, everything has gone to 💩 in AZ.
This should finalize the "divorce" between the state of Arizona and former A.C. owner Alex Meruelo. If Meruelo was indeed the sour ingredient in the mix, then someone should quickly come forward and continue NHL hockey in Arizona. But realistically, the Coyotes have had MANY owners, and several arena troubles…hey, even Gretzky walked away! Meruelo was NEVER the creation or the cause of the financial problems with the Coyotes. I think Arizona thought another professional sports franchise was too much to support with too little support.
“Coloured me shocked! 😮 “ button.
most uniquely awesome logo AND jersey design in NHL history.
I feel for my fellow Coyotes fans.
Shocking. I’m am not surprised. Now it’s time for Fisher to abandon the A’s, please!
Ideal way forward (IMO):
– NHL buys Coyotes brand back from AM
– New ownership group comes forward led by an AZ native and/or someone Yotes fans trust (named Doan, Tkachuk, or Bissonette perhaps?)
– ownership group builds positive relationships with Valley metros and the remnants of Coyotes youth hockey programs while laying the groundwork for a new arena.
– build new arena and secure expansion franchise
– name new franchise the Arizona Phoenix 🔥
– secure rights to old Coyotes branding from NHL
– bring back the kachina as a throwback jersey
– win the Stanley Cup
– everyone lives happily ever after
It was known for months that the Coyotes had interested this parcel. This last minute cancelation seems to convenient.
Alex Meruelo is like if Gill from the Simpsons had a team.
He had 5 years to get an arena and he decides to give up at the very beginning? What a joke
Just wondering if this is a case of putting the cart before the horse by Mr. Meruelo. If the scenario you laid out is correct getting a special permit for building would have taken at least 1 year before construction could even begin so getting it before or after the auction doesn’t matter. The terms to meet the NHL requirements would never be met in time. The next question becomes does Utah now take the Coyotes name or adopt a new name?
Conspiracy theory: The reason Utah hasn’t named their team is because the NHL knew/suspected this would happen. Meruelo walks away, the NHL gets the Coyotes trademarks back, Utah gets them and stays as the (Utah) Coyotes.
