1. Strange how some of the guests (and hosts…maybe-ish?) this week have been so skeptical about the Canucks' ability to move off bad contracts, retain their own UFAs, and set themselves up to sign other good UFAs. So far they are 3 for 3 and its only July 27.

  2. I don't agree that Colorado and Tampa's depth mean they weren't also extremely top heavy. The team that wins always have 2 or 3 of the Top five players at their position.

    Colorado:

    MacKinnon, top 3 center
Makar, top 2 or 3 def
    Rantannan, top 5 wingers

    Tampa:

    Kucherov, top 3 winger
    Hedman, top 3 def
    Vasilevskiy, top 2 goalie

    Depth? Or TALENT?

  3. Depth is the most important thing at this point. Obviously, you don't just want to get a bunch of pluggers, but as much as I'd love both Zadorov and Guentzel, maybe they're better off getting a combination that includes 2 or 3 of Pesce, Dillon, Marchessault, Skinner, Terevainan and Toffoli. The last thing you want is to be a top heavy team. Maybe you make the playoffs, but you're the Leafs at best. Maybe you get lower tier guys, but the talent is more spread out and hopefully fits Tocchet's philosophy. Guentzel would be great, but then you're still thin on the back end.

  4. I think it was on the S&P show where a guest said finding the next Joshua or replacing him is easier than replacing Zadorov. If it's true they can only sign one of the two, based on that statement I would have expected them to go with Z when it seemed like he was more interested in staying in Vancouver than DJ.
