@Canucks de Vancouver

    Would an agent ever go out and admit that there was some behind the scenes tampering going on though?

    Dreger just said Leafs are ready to offer him long term 5-7 years to keep AAV down

    Tanev is going to change his cellphone number.

    This gives Toronto the option to sign him to an ~~8~~ year max deal, lowering the AAV. Still, he’s 34 and plays a hard game. I shudder at the thought of getting 2-3 seasons out of the guy and being on the hook for 5-6 more seasons of cap hit. Big yikes.

    Edit: 7 year max deal. Dreger is wrong. Either way, this is basically cap circumvention, Tanev will be dead if he plays in the NHL until he’s 41.

  5. What is the benefit of trading for a players rights? Is it that you get to negotiate a contract before free agency and other teams?

    I’m glad we are not throwing a Benning-esque contract out to a 34 year old. As much as I love him, this is one of those plays that a team that has 61% of its cap in 5 players has to make to compete at the expense of the future.

    We aren’t in that position.

    Allvin isn’t desperate, so the future will still be intact. Having reasonable term allows us to be competitive for a long time. See how this OEL buyout is affecting us? Do you want that again?

    The Leafs must really be banking on Tanev wanting to sign in Toronto.

    If I were Tanev, there’s no way I would forgo testing the market just 1.5 days before free agency.
