  1. Leafs competing with themselves. Will overpay and overextend. Can't we for once sign a player on a team friendly deal? It's so frustrating to watch them screw themselves, signing NMCs etc ..

  2. Don't tell me that this scenario hasn't been back-channeled. Tanev is a Toronto guy & it would not surprise me one iota that Tree will overpay, especially on term. The possibility Tanev signs elsewhere seems unlikely imo. The only question is, can he stay healthy for 3 or 4 yrs. History suggests that may be unlikely. 90% he's a Leaf on July 1st. 75% this deal ages poorly.

  3. FYI, unless a player is on your roster, or reserve list by the trade deadline, then he can't be offered an 8 yr deal. Tanev limited to 7 yrs with Toronto as insane as that sounds. I love Tanev, but for a guy with almost no offence & now 34 yrs old, this has all the hallmarks of a blunder. I hope I'm wrong.

  4. lol why would he sign an 7 year deal and then agree to retire after 3 or 4? Why would he give up all that money? The dumbest take I have ever heard. If he agrees to a buyout to retire then a good portion still goes against the cap as dead weight for years. And they would do all that for a Dman in his mid 30s way past his prime? If Treliving signs him for 7 years then he should be fired immediately.

  5. They need a puck moving dman who they can use on the pp …zadorov will want too much …the need for another puck moving dman is more important

  6. I see a bit of an overpay per season for Tanev, but balanced out where the last several years will be buried in LTIR. So…guessing 5.5 by 6 years. Hopefully get two solid and one lesser season from him before he has a career ender and is paid for it

  7. Reason for the trade is to get him signed before July 1st so they dont have to worry about him and can focus on other players right at 12 monday

  8. Ive heard max is 7. Not 8.

If Dallas had of signed him and traded him then yea. But I think he would have had to been a Leafs since trade deadline.

  9. Term does not matter really, if they have a gentlemans agreement to "Muzzinate" him at some point a few years into his Leaf tenure.

  10. He cannot sign for 8 years. Only the team who owns the original contract and that player has to be on that team at the trade deadline. Can be extended 8 years

  11. I see this as the shareholders telling Treliving what to do, and he's doing it. Getting an older player nearing the end of his career. Just like they do all too often. This way they can say "maybe next year" again.

  12. This is a great strategy for the leafs going forward. If they find a player that they really like who's in his early to mid 30's, offer a long term contract that's front-loaded. This way the player gets his money and can retire before the contract is done. Brilliant.
