Awesome. How often is a 30 year old given a 7-year contract?

Worth noting, no trade/movement protection on this contract.

  3. I’m still curious how they are going to score goals this year.

Honestly, I like it guys. Look at the free agency board today; guys are getting paid. This is the cost of doing business. I think this is a creative way to create more offense for this year considering the crazy costs. Would love to see us get one more winger via free agency (maybe skinner on a lower AAV contract, would probably have to give him a little bit of term though) or trade (Laine with some cap retention)

This is a good thing. You will always pay a premium on a right-shot defenseman. With how the game and training is changing, a lot of guys are playing well into their 30s, particularly offensive-minded players who aren’t banging themselves up with a ton of physicality.

This has an interesting impact on our team as a whole, too. Having offensive weapons on the blue line offloads some of the pressure to score from our forwards, while simultaneously demanding more attention from opposing defenses – opening up more opportunities for our forwards. Not to mention, we’re bringing in an experienced guy who is a Stanley Cup Champion.

With about $10m in cap space left, hopefully we’ll see new deals for Beniers and Tolvanen soon, but I don’t see how we escape this offseason without trading someone. A good chunk of contracts are in their final year, and a lot of these guys are going to want a pay bump that we won’t be able to give them.
