  1. 20+ year exclusive Sabres fan here. Never complain. Have been optimistic and have supported Adams this whole time.
This trade ended that. I'm furious and disheartened.
Also fell in love with the Oilers this past season. First team outside the Sabres I can call myself a fan of. With Skinner and Savoie heading there, I'm going to have to follow them going forward. What will be telling is whose games I watch more of this coming season. It's incredibly frustrating, because I've been happy with all the moves to rebuild our bottom 6 this offseason (Sabres) – but this just killed me.
I was hoping for a Benson and/or Krebs and/or Pick(s) trade for an experienced top line guy if we made another move. Lafferty or Krebs could be our 3rd line C. I don't care how fast McLeod skates. We just loaded up on toughness and people who can play the PK, we did not need this. Fast skating and a 50% faceoff record last season isn't going to get us closer to a cup. Savoie coming up in next year or two would have. Done defending Adams.

  2. Savoie really stagnated in his development even going back to his draft year, that combined with his boom or bust profile really tanks his value. That being said this trade is still bad for Buffalo

  3. Mcloud is no Savoie in terms of potential but he is still a really solid player. Really solid on the pk and skates like the wind

  4. Super sports agents like Jeff Jackson see things differently than every day run of the mill over-used over employed good ole boys club GMs. Jackson wants this to be his team, top to bottom, before the new GM is hired. Evidently the GM role is easy as shit for Jackson. I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson pulls off one more absolute stunner block buster trade before the season starts. Maybe involving Darnell Nurse and 1 or 2 first rounders. Acquiring a top pairing D no one ever thought would jump ship from their current team to be with the cup or bust Oilers.

  5. It gets realy weird…

Back in 2020, the Sharks traded away their rights to a fourth-round pick, which the Oilers practically snagged for free. That pick happened to fall in the same draft where Tullio was picked at #126, and the Oilers also grabbed their freebie at #100 with Carter Savoie. Fast forward two years, and the Sabres grabbed highly-touted prospect Matt Savoie at #9 in the 2022 draft… yadda, yadda, yadda. Now, four years later, the Oilers have pulled off a move that feels straight out of a movie script: They've acquired Matt Savoie at #9 overall and Carter Savoie at #100 overall, returning two brothers both back to their birthplace to play hockey in Edmonton! (St. Albert, AB)

  6. Savoie is under sized and unproven. He got jumped in the prospect pool several times in just a couple years. It’s a win win trade

  7. I don't really like Matt Savoie cus I view him as someone who's never going to be a legitimate top six guy and doesn't have the style I want for my bottom six. I wouldn't trade Zach Bensen though

  8. I live in Edmonton. Huge Oilers fan. Man did we ever score huge on free agency this week! We don't even have a GM yet. Thanks for Matt. We gettin the Cup this year, you should come over for the finals. This city is hockey insane. Over 50,000 fans downtown for game 7…no riots, just lots of tears. Pitter patter

  9. If this was a fantasy league and I was commissioner I'd veto this trade.
Adams has always been in over his head and is trying to save face from not getting anything done during the draft. Makes me miss Tim Murray.

  10. Stop bitching, we haven’t made the playoffs in 13 years and we gave up one! Where would Savoie’s play in this roster this year? Big Gabe hunting? For who? 22% of the league has NMC and who is waiving them to come to Buffalo!

Erat for Forsberg. Erat was a 32 year old UFA for the Capitals only top prospects. You forgot to factor that into the equation.

Of course Savoie’s is Edmonton’s top prospect, they’ve traded nearly all their picks in the past 3 years.

    OMG, you like Tyler Tulio.

Analytics, have you looked at Ryan McLeod’s analytics? One of the best penalty killer in the year.

  11. First of all. Matt Savoie is talented, I would have preferred us sending maybe a different prospect. But here is some facts that made Savoie the guy to trade:

    1. He has had two significant injuries in his short time with the Sabres, he basically can't stay healthy
    2. Yes, he did put upp big numbers i the WHL, but he is also in his draft +2 season. The fact that he is even playing there in his draft +2 season is a concern.
    3. Didn't even make the team Canada in 2023 world juniors
    4. 1 point in 4 games in 2024 juniors
    5. He has been eclipsed by a number of prospects in the system, like Kulich, Helenius, Ostlund, Benson (if we can call him a prospect) and Wahlberg.

You are talking Savoie up to be a top prospect in the Sabres system, that is totally incorrect. You are also talking about bad resource management and then thinks we should trade our biggest talent in Benson for a guy with one year left on his deal who most garantueed won't want to sign here. That would not be bad resource management, that would have been completely retarded.

  12. They have been given every chance to create a cup winning team. The reason they haven’t is because of incompetence. I do think Buffalo needs more size and grit though. That’s maybe where they were trying to go with this trade.
