I have no idea why Sabres fans are acting like he is a slam dunk top 6 30+ goal scorer

  2. Roll_DM

I honestly had him pegged as a bust. His D+1 year was dismal and his D+2 year as an overager looked like a guy who gets one or two camp invites and then spends his career in the minors.

If Savoie projects unfavorably or even just bottom six, this is actually a very savvy [trade by KA](https://x.com/IneffectiveMath/status/1809322794825719991?t=XOobm7puY83QV4ta5UJScg&s=19). McLeod is [a solid 3C](https://ibb.co/1LVVSkv) right now at a great age and contract.

If Savoie projects as a top six player, it’s a bit of an overpay.

I know loss aversion is a very powerful factor in the initial freakout, but there’s a material chance this ends up being a very good trade for Buf.

I think he made the most sense to trade – he had more value than Rosen, and a much lower floor than Kulich. Ostlund and Helenius project as centers, or at least Ostlund has a better shot at sticking at center than Savoie

I like Savoie’s chances at turning into a second line winger, but he’s the right combination of value and risk to trade relative to the other prospects

Highest variance imo as he’s played a total of 6 games in a mens league whereas Kulich and Rosen have 2 seasons in the AHL, Ostlund played a season in the SHL, and even Helenius played against men at age 17 in Finland. That experience makes it easier for the Sabres to project how all of the other players might develop as complete players

Sabres have 5 prospects just like him. They don’t have anyone like McLeod

  6. Jaymantheman2

McLeod scored 4 goals in the playoffs. 3 vs Florida in Final round, so that is interesting

It’s amazing how over the course of 4 hours, Savoie has gone from the most favored prospect by the fan base, to a guy who might not even make the NHL, let alone be a top 6 forward, lol.

I get people aren’t high on Savoie. But Edmonton was over the barrel, over the cap. And we traded them assets for a bottom 6, they have tried to replace two deadlines in a row.

  9. shotzoflead94

He was the oldest of our 5 prospects at the wjc and had by far the worst production

  10. bustthelease

    It’s a fair trade. McLeod was a 2nd round pick and is 24. He’s a 3C. We also pick up a prospect.

If Savoie becomes a star we lose this trade. It’s a risk we need to make.

I wonder what the plan for Krebs is now. Do they package him in a package for a top 6?

This is the first time ive felt we made a risky trade in the sense that we could either wildly win this bc savoie has injury troubles and never develops or we could lose this bc we delivered a guy who can play with mcdavid at a high level and become a superstar in his own right.

If savoie becomes an elite top line winger this trade is awful, if savoie fails to overcome injury issues and the size disadvantage he faces then the sabres got value for something that ultimately wasnt value. Ive already said my thoughts in other threads and im happy to respectfully converse with those that disagree or want to talk about it.

We get the known product, a respectable middle six player that has playoff experience and quality NHL skills, but the question is what is Matt savoie going to be? Time will tell, but this is the first trade i really dont like.

Fwiw i loved KA’s draft trade, despite trading before we saw the board it felt like we got significantly more value compared to other first round puck swaps that occured day of.

  12. Stop I’m supposed to hate the trade… but coming to be ok with it

Savoie will be very similar to Mittelstadt. Good to great player. Slightly overhyped.

  14. RepresentativeOwn307

Buffalo can’t have an entire team of 5’9″ or 5’10 » prospects who disappear at the end of February when the league gets physical. Matt Savoie was never going to be the guy who knocks down a defender and scores the game winner in April unless he grew. We simply had too many prospects that were redundant in that size and skill level.

  15. JoeSchmohawk93

In terms of draft picks I would think we got second round value. And we just gave up a second for Beck who should’ve been a third or a fourth. If the team takes a step forward and gets results then Kevyn’s a hero again, but man this trade bums me out.

  16. organizedconfusion5

More like adams overpaying for another bottom 6 forward.

    Another F grade trade.

Every downvote represents one delusional fan.

  17. lucky4180

I just wish we were trading savoie + multiple pieces for a first line player.

  18. Cute-Business-6103

I was a season ticket holder when he played for the Winnipeg Ice. I always thought that his comparable ( in my opinion) was Nic Petan, who dominated Junior hockey, but couldn’t quite take the next step. I hope Savoie proves me wrong, but it would not surprise me if McLeod plays a lot more NHL games than Savoie.

  19. Matthockey9

His size kills him a lot. He’s very soft too as a player a guy his size almost has to be a menace and be more similar to Marchand
