He needs to either get bigger or have Patrick Kane on ice awareness to avoid hits

I would imagine his metabolism is crazy quick. I remember being that age and eating a ton but not putting on any weight. I’d bet when he’s 22-23 he’ll start filling out more.

Wiry. Firkus gonna be laying fools out.

TIL I have the body of a professional athlete

These guys are just burning up everything they eat. They’ll get there.

Funnily enough, I have a photo of my 7 year old standing next to a couple 19-20 year old CHL players and without all the gear on, their legs are not much bigger than my beanpole child’s. It’s wild.

Hockey Psychology recently put out a video talking about size in the NHL. [I’ll link it here](https://youtu.be/PkGJUEdNC-8), but the gist of it is « It matters most for goaltenders, less so for defensemen, and matters the least for forwards ». Additionally, many successful players– in all generations of hockey– have been smaller than average size. Most notable is Wayne Gretzky, of course, but more recent is Marchessault, who’s listed as 5’9″ and 185 pounds. He put up 76 points last season (at 33).

I’m not saying Firkus will necessarily be as good as Marchessault (and I’m obviously not calling him Wayne Gretzky the 2nd) but I don’t find myself worrying about his size as much these days.

Would it be nice if he was bigger? Yeah, and he might get there regardless. But he can certainly be successful in the NHL despite his size, and not because of it.

He’s only 20, I’d rather he be 15-20 pounds heavier but I’m sure he’ll get there. He’d not be the lightest player in the league though in either case (I don’t think, anyways)

My favorite player ever Pavel Bure at his peak speed and agility was 5’10 185/190. The kid has some bulking to do but otherwise if he’s fast and can stay on his feet, he’ll be great.

But yes, I was around that height and weight in his age and couldn’t last a day in the league lol

I know he’s sitting down but he looks a lot smaller than 5’11”, 161lbs. More like 5’9”, 150lbs. Heck he looks smaller than Theo Fleury.

What’s Jagger holding in this picture?

He could file me out all he wanted

I’m sure the nutrition team and athletic trainers will help make sure he gains safely, I’m not that worried about it. There are plenty of thin/short nhl players that make an impact and he’s still pretty young. Weight comes with age when you have this body type.

Obviously it depends on the style of game, but if the core strength is there, your stance has a good, wide base, and you’re strong on your edges, you don’t necessarily have to rely on mass. Even better if you’re a good enough skater to avoid being hit.
