I love the guy, love his attitude, was pissed we couldn’t get him last season. I would have been overjoyed if we had. Now he’s like six months older, his age doesn’t concern me.

Would have loved to see Tanev back with Vancouver, but really happy to see him get to go home to finish off a really solid career. He’s such an easy guy to cheer for.

It’s also a bit of a full circle moment, because I remember a few years back there was lots of rumours/talk of Vancouver trading Tanev to Toronto.

And at the time, I remember there was a lot of disrespect towards Tanev and the trade proposals were downright insulting.

So it’s kind of cool to see it come full circle, and see him get the respect he deserves from the Toronto market. He’s an absolute warrior.

What I do like is that Tanev is essentially 2 for the price of 1. Because you’re getting one of the best shutdown defensemen in the market, a RHD, and an excellent puck mover & penalty killer. Great acquisition by that metric. But you’re also getting, hopefully, the perfect partner to enable Rielly and unlock a higher level of play from him, so Tanev is an upgrade to 2 defense spots in one go.

Occasionally he matched up against top competition but from a couple stat trackers I’ve seen he was mid to low 70th percentile for QoC.

High-end 2nd pair guy, no doubt. I don’t think that changes the outlook for the team, though.
