  1. Honestly that is not surprising, great talent fell to him in Tampa. Detroit has been poor to missing the playoffs under Steve’s tenure as Detroit’s GM.

  2. Yzerman hasn't made any significant trade to catapult the wings. Acquiring a 35 year old doesn't count. Look at NJ, or Florida's improvement. By comparison, one could make the case for Yzerman being overrated.

  3. Jake Walman is overrated. On any playoff team he is a mediocre D man. We basically switched out Walman for Edvinsson and saved a bunch of money. Stevie Y is a genius! Edvinsson is a top tier D man in a few years. Last year came in and was arguably our 2nd best D man.

  4. I couldn't agree more , solid at drafting but some of his trades are iffy at best and his free agent signings are generally just bad

  5. If I were to nitpick he seems a little nonchalant. I also don’t like all the power Kris Draper seems to have. I don’t trust him and it looks like he’s the one running the show at times. Around draft time it seems like Stevie just calls his former teammates living in Sweden and they just tell him who to draft rather than doing the homework himself. Feels like the team is ran by a board of directors comprised of all the red wings from 20 years ago rather than just Steve. I could be wrong just the vibes I get

  6. Lol seems like the author wanted clicks and he got them. This isnt even really up for debate. He took over with multiple large yet horrible contracts he had to maneuver around. Inherited no prospects. Basically had to build from nothing. 5 years in and the fruits of his labor are finally starting to flourish. Not winning the lottery and not picking in the top 3 at all, I'd say he's doing pretty good.

He preached patience when hired in 2019 and people seem to forget what he preached for the past 4 seasons. He's done an amazing job with a few mistakes (name a gm that hasnt made a few mistakes). He's not going anywhere either.

It truly is the offseason when this is a topic of discussion 😂.

  7. Last year they should have played the young players, give them some experience. Who cares if they missed the playoffs by 10 points instead of one.

  8. As a Wings fan, I said they won’t make it to the playoffs before last year season started, and I was almost wrong. I still think they will miss it this year, however, I don’t discredit Yzerman one bit since he basically he to rebuild from scratch with bad lotto luck.

  9. I don’t know if I would call him overrated. Maybe a little disappointing since it’s his 6th year and the Red Wings still have a ways to go to compete for a cup. But he was left with an absolute mess by Ken Holland. Just tired of waiting to see the wings in the playoffs again.

  10. The Wings would be a better team with a PLAYER,S type coach like P Maurice or R Brind'amour,,even the new head coach in T.O.. In my opinion the Wings are soft team to play and could also use a little size,,the Trouba add would have helped…They have good potential still looking for a 40 goal scorer and hopefully Costa or the other kid they drafted in the 2ed round last year comes through in nets…Love the Wings and I know that in my heart they are still 3 to 5 years away and hopefully guys like Larken will still be strong ….Go Wings!!!!

  11. The expectations were not playoffs or bust last year with hopes to compete with the top teams. That point just isn’t true. I think most level headed fans were expecting ‘first team out, last team in’ which is exactly what they were. The yzerman criticism is mind boggling to me, and I truly can’t imagine anyone who pays attention really believes he’s doing a poor job at all.

  12. The team has improved every season since he’s been there, that’s the goal. He said it’d be a slow climb.

  13. Detroit has the number 1 prospect pool in the NHL. SY free agent signings have been hit or miss but thats what you expect from free agent signings however his draft history with Tampa and Detroit I'd put next to anyone…player for player.

Has he been perfect?…no.. but he also hasnt had the number 1 pick or the number 2 or the number 3…most of your NHL stars come from those draft slots.

But….Lukas Raymond is going to be a star, Seider is going to be a star. The prospect pool is loaded, if you arent from Detroit stick you comments deep into your you know what….. We dont care.

People on the outside are completely clueless as to what Detroit is about to do.

  14. He was overrated in Tampa. Only needs on the internet think he’s done anything but prospects don’t win you cups and he can’t even find any of those. He has done nothing but make bad FA moves and mediocre drafting at best. He should be fired next year. He’s just a face like Linden was for the Canucks but for some reason Detroit lets this clown make decisions. It’s insane.

  15. Yzerman has exceeded what I thought was possible with this team so far. I still like Nazar better than Kasper but I could be proven wrong on that. Loved the Seider pick from when SY said "Google him." Loved the Danielson pick after watching a shift by shift. ASP, Edvinsson, Cossa, Augustine, Wallinder, Buium, Buchelnikov, Soderblom, Lombardi, Mazur. Lots of talent there. Soderblom is a 6th rounder and is playing in GR. That's already a win but watch for him this year. He may break out.

  16. Det got much more defensive, mostly by default, a few additions, and a real good goalie. Hope we make the goals up, especially the timely ones along with being healthier.

  17. In my opinion as a wings fan one thing that has slowed the rebuild is the
absolute terrible draft luck they have had since 2019 they had first round pick numbers 6-4-6-8-9-15 when they were at the bottom of the league

  18. Need to look Redwings history: one round won from 1967-1986; four playoff appearances. (We are now eight years in row without playoff appearances) We are not as bad as that twenty year span yet. Not really SY's fault nor Holland, except Zetterberg or Datsyuk were never replaced at the level needed. So it is natural dropoff. Can it be reversed; let's see this year.
    Go Redwings!!

  19. Here are my two-cents: He inherited a mess after Ken Holland. And I love Ken Holland, but there were many bad contracts during the his regime and left the next regime a lot of work to fix. Hell, look at Edmonton's cap space now. They're $-354k this year and I'm sure it'll be worse in the next couple years. They will have no cap space and probably no room to sign Draisatil next year or even McDavid (2026) in the following if they end up resigning Draisatil, unless they dismantled their core, like Bouchard, Nurse, Hyman, Skinner, etc. Not going to lie, but that does sounds familiar when Holland was running the show here.

So anyways, Yzerman had to fix a lot of those contracts, like Nielson, Abdelkader, Weiss, Green, etc. That's why you don't see much long-term on the players that Yzerman signed. I like Yzerman signing Motte or Gustafsson and resigning Fischer.

Signing players Chariot, Holl, Compher, Copp or even trading for Petry looks bad when you look on paper, but there are reasons they are signed and traded for. They're just placeholders until the young guns are ready to come up, like Edvinsson, Sandin-Pellikka, Danielson, Kasper, Mazur, Johansson, Wallinder, Lombardi, Bucheknikov, etc. If those signed/traded players panned out, that's awesome. But I don't expect them to be here when our young guns gets called up. Edvinsson is probably a lock on the roster for the upcoming season. And I'm expecting Danielson, Johansson, Kasper, and Mazur making a jump as well either beginning of the season or somewhere in the season.

Only slight gripe I have is the goaltending. IMO, signing Talbot was good, but I don't expect him to be an elite goaltender. It's hard to get an elite goaltender. Nobody wants to trade away an elite goaltender without getting something monstrous assets back. Only way to get an elite goalie is to draft them and build from within, or trade for them while they're a young prospect and hoping they pan out. Like Yzerman did when he traded for Nedeljkovic or Husso. They had high potential, but they became inconsistent as the season went. But you can't blame Yzerman for that. It's like a gamble. You rarely see young goalies (under 23) brought up early in the league and become elite and/or consistent. Swayman/Vasilevskiy didn't hit their stride until 24ish, while Saros/Shesterkin/etc were 26. I expect Talbot/Lyon/Husso or whoever goalies we might get in the future to be on the team until Cossa (23) or Augustine (19) are ready.

To sum this up: Yzerman is not overrated. It's about looking at the big picture and not just a band-aid so we can sneak in the playoffs. It's about building the foundation from square one. It's all about patience and trust. Now, I will start to question Yzerman if he goes of course and starts to go overboard on FA signings, like Nashville did (They will be screw in the next 4-7 years) or make ridiculous trades… And no, I still don't think Walman was a bad trade. It opened the spot for Edvinsson and we needed the cap space for Seider/Raymond/Veleno. Heck, Yzerman might've set up ourselves in next year's FA for Draisatil or Marner (Next year, we have $41 mil cap space with 12 players signed). I know we want them to win now, but like I said before: You got to look the big picture with patience and trust. So, that's my take on this.

  20. People want him to sell the farm to squeak into the playoffs. Holland did that for years to keep the steak alive and that’s why the rebuild has taken so long. He’s not building a team to get in for one year, he’s building one for sustained success. There are some bad contracts (Holl, Copp) but those aren’t for the future. They’re stop-gaps to get the prospects experience so they don’t get thrown right to the fire as 19 year olds

  21. All I will say is Hockey Writers is by far the worst podcast for the Wings at least, so I take it the whole network is the same lol

  22. Even Edmonton took 9-10 years after drafting Draisaitl and McDavid to reach a cup finals. Rebuilds are just really slow in NHL even with elite talent. But it is kinda annoying that people get all butthurt if you even criticize Yzerman a little bit, he’s done a pretty good job incrementally improving the team every year but lets be honest he’s made some bad moves too.

  23. Give it 5 years, the wings WILL be a big bad dominant force in the east, and a perennial cup contender. True rebuilds take a looong time.

  24. Red Wing fans.. here's your proof!! Here it is in negative form, that Stevie-Y is doing it the RIGHT way!.. the way you can tell is to combine yearly success of improvement with draft picks that are developing under him in the NHL level: Seider, Raymond, Likely Berggren and Edvinsson in the 4 years his been here along with how financially setup the team is for the future.. and that's how you figure it out!😊.. its sooo simple.. its like a math equation.. but in hockey analytics..

The reason he's "overrated by those who don't matter is because NO TEAM has ever done it the RIGHT way, and long enough to see it all the way through in the salary cap era!.. don't you see it??!..

And a lot of people were and are looking for him to be Stevie-Y from Tampa and sign big fish.. but the Red Wings situation isn't about that.. it's a different problem that's set up for long Stanley Cup runs.. and people don't know what to make of it, THAT'S why Stevie is getting the criticism.. people Are anxious and anzy and they NEVER seen a GM do it like Steve Yzerman is doing it RIGHT NOW.. HOWEVER ☝️ this style of GM'ing isnt always perfect but it's VERY rewarding!🙏 I promise 🙏.. so don't pay anyone any mind and continue to TRUST..
He won't let us down.. 😉🤙

  25. If the Red Wings can start the first two months of the year strong with 15 to 20+ wins and maintain that momentum and not lose 10 straight games or whatever it was and stay healthy. This team could finish third or fourth making the first or second wildcard easily.

  26. I don’t know who wrote this piece, but they certainly don’t understand the complete dumpster fire he inherited.
And hey genius, we are still in the rebuild and may be for another couple of years. It sucks, but in order to build a year in and year out contender, building through the draft takes time.

  27. Ya ok ,he’s the most underrated GM And his work is underrated and underestimated,f that 💩 bro and F all the yzerman haters tell that overrated statement to the Tampa GM with what dynasty yzerman built in Tampa that will shut your mouth

  28. Yzerman overrated? why? because wings haven't gotten the lottery boost like hawks and sj have to get the elite guys? 8 straight years missing playoffs and wings never moved up once. I guess re-builds only work when you are the pens and tank for the franchise guys. This is a click bait joke. Holland left the wings in such bad shape anyone who thought yzerman could turn wings into playoff caliber winners in less than five years is nuts. Yzerman has compiled one of the best systems in the nhl. Problem is not getting the elite guys at the top those prospects will take time to develop. And for not getting the top pick thanks to 17 win '19-'20 season yzerman still got raymond at 4 and got seider at 6 in '19. Maybe blame some of holland's horrible drafts before yzerman got there for this re-build taking so long and having to wait out his bad contracts. zadina, cholwolski were just horrible first round picks. Yzerman needs a regular goalie that is good and better bottom pair d men. And if this team fails again into next season get a better coach. Maybe one that isn't bald for once.

  29. I’m glad more people are starting to notice the yzerscam. Worst gm in the league and it’s not even close

  30. To call goaltending Yzerman's Achilles heel is strange.. Terrible, untradeable, contracts like Holl, Chirot, Petry, and Copp are his Achilles heel. All of which, he signed, putting the team up against the cap with no 2C and a laughably bad D-core. 3 RHD, and 2 of them are Holl and Petry!?! Chirot is a top pair D-man? Not in this, or any other universe. Yes, I think we'll get there once the kids come up and fill those roles. Nate at 2C, Cossa and Augustine in back, etc.. But, we're a couple of years out from that. I'm fine with considering the "Yzerplan" as an 8 yr rebuild, but my expectations for the next couple of years are tempered.

  31. Since trading up for cossa haven’t been too crazy about most of Stevie’s moves. Kane and debrincat are great, but you’d think he would’ve had better control of the D.. Walman as a cap dump is awful
