  1. "Columbus Blue Jackets" and "competent GM" are two phrases I never expected to hear in the same sentence, but damn is it refreshing. This is a kind of hope and optimism that the CBJ faithful haven't felt in quite some time. Once they finish cleaning up Jarmo's screw-ups, they might actually be on the way towards finally becoming, dare I say, decent.

  2. Alex Nylander signing an AHL contract is a shock to me. This is a 26 year old former 1st round pick (8th overall) who ,may not have found his stride at the NHL level but has certainly not played himself out of the league.
This has to be waiver circumvention with plans to upgrade his contract later in the season if he is needed. There is also likely an element of him wanting to play only in Toronto.
He will be in camp and he will get a look in some pre-season games so we will see if he has a chance for an NHL contract.

  3. Very happy with the signings! We did well! Seems like we have a GM that isn't just willing to sign unproven players to whatever they want. That's refreshing

  4. I do not know why, but somehow I do see an improvement for Columbus. Still off Playoffs of course, but at least ingeresting.

  5. We're just very appreciative of all the work you do through the summer keeping us up to date on things.

  6. Good time of year to play more ball hockey and spend more time with the family. It's strange when "Columbus does regular hockey business without any hint of scandal or gross incompetence" is in and of itself a news item.

  7. I must say I'm really surprised Alex couldn't get an NHL contract with another team. He showed enough upside in Columbus for a team to take a chance on him.

  8. Alex Nylander had a hat trick for the jackets last season and his points went up too. I am kind of shocked no NHL team offered him a 1 year min but I do not know or follow how good or bad he actually is.

  9. I think Alex Nylander was holding out to see if the Leafs would take a chance on him. Dude could definitely fill a 3rd line scoring role and 2nd PP. Injuries during season and playoffs should definitely see some space in the top/middle six for him to really get something going.

I did draft him last season on my fantasy team thinking he had break out potential playing top 6 in Pittsburgh, although he didn't fit there he did play very well in Columbus. Should be good for 50 games minimum, maybe 20 goals and a contract to stay the following year.

  10. Shannon, maybe you can do a video on which RFAs have not been signed yet? I know the angst is palpable when a star player like — I dunno — Matty Beniers hasn't been signed yet. Help talk us down off that ledge!!

  11. Alex Nylander had a good start with Columbus, then he got injured. He can’t stop having these career hiccups.

  12. The Johnson and Marchenko deals are already steals, I’m shocked they signed at those rates with term. KJ I thought was due for a 1-year prove it, and Marchenko a long-term $5M+ deal. Tidy bit of work!

  13. Jamie Colliton, Joe Quenville's questionable replacement, destroyed Alex's confidence. He didn't seem to know how to develop talent. Thankfully, Stan Bowman is Edmonton's problem now.

  14. Kind of surprised all he could get was an AHL deal considering how well he played in Columbus last year but hey, hopefully he gets to play with his brother at some point this season.
