The reason why the Bruins aren't a great comparison is that they missed the playoffs two years in a row back in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and they were actually sellers to the point that they acquired three first-round picks for the 2015 draft. The Pens were never once sellers until 2024 … they were buyers from 2007 through 2023.
Hindsight is 20/20 … but if you wanted the Pens to follow the Bruins path, then they should have been sellers at the deadline back in 2019 and 2020 and acquired a bunch of 1st and 2nd round picks to build for 2023 and beyond. But that also would've meant missing the playoffs back in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and nobody at the time wanted them to do that.
