I dont think Tavares should have ever been the captain anyway. Everyone knew it was Matthews' team, and it was just delaying the inevitable. I don't hate Tavares either, I just think the choice to make an outsider captain has delayed the teams development and ability to take the next step.
I'm not a Leafs fan though, thats just my outsider opinion.
The St. Louis Blues tendered offer sheets to Edmonton Oilers restricted free agents Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg on Tuesday.
Edmonton has seven days to match St. Louis' proposals. The Blues made a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins involving only draft picks earlier Tuesday to ensure they have proper compensation for the respective offer sheets.
Matthews being captain is probably expected but I don’t think he should have been promoted. Matthews is a great goal scorer but he has always been a selfish player, and frankly I don’t believe he has the team as his number 1 priority. I can’t think of anyone else who should be captain, so I would have kept Tavares as the skipper until they find someone else, or Matthews matures more.
The Groundhog Day Tour is returning to Toronto. Adding a 'C' to the jersey of Mr. Headache is the change everyone was waiting for. Rumors is he might be getting a deal with Tylenol .. I can imagine. "When you get a headache during the playoffs, take a Tylenol and hide under your blanket."
Good for Matthews, he'll be happy to wear the C. Will it help them see the team needs a Number One D man in the next draft, I'm not so sure. Has any team taken the C away from a guy and given it to someone else, then won the Cup in the next 2 years?? San Jose did it, no Cups.
I do think it was inevitable that matthews would get the captaincy, but with the timing, it definitely feels like this is an attempt to mask that the leafs are spending yet another offseason spinning their tires rather than making any real change
As an Islanders fan, I never felt JT was the best in the captains role. Definitely a team leader but his PR has always been dry, he does better in an A
Yawn Leaf ownership has the distraction machine in full gear. They replace the GM but it's meaningless cause he's not allowed to touch the core. They change the coach which makes a couple fans happy and may have some impact, though the main problem in Toronto is cap management and roster construction. Now they are changing up the captaincy. Worse than meaningless. Did Henri Richard take the captaincy from Jean Beliveau before he retired? What's next a Ryan Reaves buy out? I know they have to throw fresh meat to the press but geez.
This is why the leafs will never do anything three months ago their fans were outraged and were demanding that marner be traded and now they are just happy Matthews was made captain and will go out and buy jerseys with the c while they convince themselves this will be the year.
Leafs trying to commit him 1st, maybe the team will follow. Could be a good captain, and even if he's not, it's still probably the smartest move for now for the commitment alone.
Being the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadians, and Boston Bruins comes with pressures from the city, media, and fans. Some players rise to the situation like Gilmore, Clark, and Sundin, and that leads to team success. But others fail to overcome the pressures like Dion Phanuf, and that was reflected in team success. That pressure is 365 days a year with no place to hide from the questions and responsibilities. Matthews has had Travares to allow him time away from hockey when he went home in the summer. That will be gone as he will have to be front and center with the media. All he has to do is look at the fun summer vacation for Marner that started in January 2024 and has not stopped for one day since it started. He could not even host a charity event without it turning into a media circus. Well, this is Matthew's team now for better or worse. If being Captain does not work out for him like Dion Phanuf, this is going end bad for him just like Phanuf…

Way overdue for Matthews. Better late than never I guess.
THG living his best life.
Came here for the Blues Offer Sheets. No video yet…
I’m gonna be honest, as a fan of another team, I just assumed Mathew’s had the C already.
