Ok Tavares leaves a team he was captain of after saying he wasn’t going anywhere (and winning one playoff series in nine years – not all his fault, we sucked but he left for ‘greener pastures’) and then he was the “missing piece” followed by the captain of the leafs for six years and won – let’s see, one playoff series. Dude has helped win two playoff series and what, two round 2 games in 15 years. He may be a hall of famer but he’s the most disappointing captain in league history who hasn’t committed a crime. And yeah, I totally expect him to have another good season, probably make you pay him 4/32 (the stamkos deal) and you can not win with him for a full decade (but at least he won’t be captain for the end of it). But he is a classy guy, so you’ve all that got that going for you. Thank god the dude got unleashed in Toronto – #flagpole

Honestly, say what you want about the Islanders going back to back final four, in this market I think if the leafs had made even one conference final with this group this era wouldn't be seen as the failure it is currently seen as, if they made two in a row this team would probably be as beloved as the Gilmour Clark period, and the Tavares signing would be viewed purely positively.
I genuinely think of it more of a distraction, get the fans happy about the new captain and their minds off of the fact they aren’t changing out any of the core 4.

Steve your right. If John wears the A and we win or go for a long run. John is definitely going to be a hall of famer. He ended the islanders series curse in overtime. Then he ended the leafs series curse in overtime. Round one or not. Two huge goals nobody forgets
I’m not a Leafs fan, but I will gladly admit that John Tavares is a future HOFer and a classy fellow. Matthews is certainly more talented, and it’s his team, sure. But try and tell me Guy Lafleur wasn’t the core of the 70’s Habs dynasty, yet he wasn’t ever even an alternate captain.
Still, I find it a bit awkward to remove the C from Tavares. He seems to be exactly what you would want from a captain. It seems like a demotion, it doesn’t seem like Matthews would be an upgrade.
That said, what do I know 🤷♂️.
Literally have never loved Tavares more than now. If he re signs team friendly he goes on my top 10 leafs all time. Team friendly to me is anything below 7m
