  1. People are losing their minds. The optics of the move are poor. I'm not in the room, but from what I've witnessed, Matthews' leadership qualities are suspect. He's a great regular season player, granted. That being said, he's impatient, moody, and condescending in interviews. He controls the room, and he's coming off the most selfish act in his tenure by causing a distraction the final week of the season, when he and the team should have been preparing for the playoffs. He was not the same player in the playoffs, and this was clear. He has been as much of a disappointment as any one throughout the playoffs year-after-year. For a guy who scored 69 goals, he is currently sitting at 1 goal in his last 10 playoff games. Keeping him is understandable, considering his talent. However, promoting this player in any capacity at this point is a losing mindset.

  2. Matthews having the C is a TERRIBLE move. We all know he’s in it for himself, he’s way too overpaid, he never shows up to the playoffs, and his leadership is abysmal. The core 4 (or at least 2 of them) need to go.

  3. YUP > Matthews as new Captain with same cap-zapping "Core-4" will guarantee a Leafs CUP WIN for sure this season! Delusional "Leaf Nation" reigns supreme along with endless "expert analysis" ad nauseum like this dude!:(

  4. yeah, maybe we will hear more voice, words, personality out of matthews, being good isnt enough for being captain, but he is amazing, so time will tell

  5. Legit terrifies haters whenever the Leafs change it up. Imagine if they win a string of cups based off this one move. Haters will go into clinical depression 😂

  6. Part of the reason the Leafs haven’t won is the Tavares contract. If he wants to make a lot here, then it’s not about giving the team the best chance to win.

  7. I’m sure JTs fine with it. All he does is lose. So what’s so hard about losing a stupid letter on his jersey while he’s laughing in rich??

  8. This team hasnt had the goaltending necessary to win 2-4 rounds. I dont blame the team, I blame management for gambling with goalies that hemorrhaged when it was time for clutch. Woll and Stolarz are unproven, but they are better than previous tandems. Stolarz doesn't get hurt, Woll is amazing, and if healthy, he is the guy.

  9. "I don't think Tavares was revered by his teammates."
"It hasn't been the smoothest fit."

    Great, accurate, honest takes.
