  1. kent hughes loves to get huge potential players and make a project out them so they can live up to their potential or get them back to their peak.

  2. I'm sure if contending teams had the cap space, they would be lining up to gamble on Laine. Not many teams have $8.5mil sitting around…

  3. Hilarious that this joker thinks the firstthing that needs to be talked about is the salary..Laine is an elite player when healthy and motivated, which he is now

  4. The Habs get some potential high skill, but also a lot of potential drama in a young dressing room. Top marks for Wadell on this trade, getting it done without having to retain salary or use a 1st round pick as a porkchop tied around the neck of Laine's contract.

  5. If Dean Evason is half the coach he was in Minny, then Jordan Harris will be well worth such a price as Laine + A 2ND ROUND PICK?! My first thought was that the cost would get Waddell fired immediately because Harris is relatively unproven in the NHL. Thinking further about it though, Laine, though having the high end, high-scoring pedigree, has almost negative value at this point, given his cap hit and his history of attitude issues on each team he's played for. I'm starting to think this is a good deal for both sides. Not that MTL needs more top-40 draft picks.

  6. Best of luck to Laine, I hope he finds success and also peace of mind in Montreal. Last few years I haven't had many reasons to watch the Habs (I am a Rangers fan) but this season I will make a point of catching games on a second screen when I can!

  7. cole will be the casualty is Laine works out. he is getting bumped to the second line. if Laine works out, that means we are closer to the playoffs. hutson and Mailloux etc are spposed tobe better than what we had the last 2 years. so maybe a wildcard spot? that means the picks aren't going to be high picks that get you the demidovs or dachs or slafs…they will probably be 15-20ish and then you have to ask yourself if it's enough to contend … fans always say yes but realistically….it's doubtful

  8. If Liane gets back to his potential, this will be a huge win. It could push Montreal into the playoffs.

  9. For a guy who just came out of the player assistance program, Montreal is probably the worse place he could have been sent.

  10. Im kind of lukewarm on Laine, but considering he only has 2 years left on his contract…
…and that the Habs have too many young d man, it is worth a shot!

  11. Dach is their man going forward on the second line. Big young, talented centers do not grow on trees. Before Dach got injured he was amazing. Maybe get a third line center that's better than Dvorak?

  12. Steal
At worst MTL has an early 2nd rounder in 2026 and can flip Laine with salary retention next year when Demidov arrives. Upside he finds his Form and loves playing in a Hockey Meca

  13. carey price, walks into the room and hands the kid a piece of edible rice paper with a pager number on it, for when things get tough again

  14. There’s 0 chance they aren’t bottom 7 in the league but they do have a lot of young players and this team is gonna be a good one in a few years

  15. You guys nailed the "no other center" bet, but you failed on the why, has almost none to do with the Cap Space. With center posish 1 & 2 being pretty set, it's more a case of keeping room unobstructed for Beck & Kapanen pretty soon (+ Hage a year or 2 after that, although he could be moved to the sides) for the future of lines 3 & 4.

  16. This move was a no brainer for Montreal IMO. They traded out a depth defenceman for a former second overall pick and second rounder that will end up being more of a late first rounder.

Little risk, only one more year after this season on the contract and they’re not yet ready to compete for the playoffs. Perfect spot for Laine to try and rediscover his love/passion for the game and reignite his career. Even if it doesn’t work out, it’s costs what? Montreal the dollars? That’s peanuts for that franchise. Absolutely fantastic move by Hughes and the Canadiens.

  17. Sorta feels like a desperation trade for Columbus, yet Montréal could easily come out on the losing end of it. Be interesting to see how this looks a year from now…

  18. I think it's wrong that you interview Frank Corrado only to stick him behind a pay wall. Free Frank Corrado!! You're treating him no better than the Leafs! Free Frank Corrado!! 😉

  19. Patrik's career has gone down hill since it started. If they paid players based on performance – he would be free at this point.

  20. All due respect to Adam, but it seems like he didn't prep enough for this…
If Dach is healthy, the 2C slot is completely locked in. Dvorak is at best a 3C and will likely be moved at the deadline.

  21. Habs were # 1 in 1 goal games last season. With Laine a healthy Dach. Hutson quarterbacking PP if Anderson can contribute this year. If Armia keeps improving realistically the Habs can play meaningful hockey this year. Absolutely they can.

  22. There’s no way the CH acquire a 2nd center this summer. They’ll wait too see what Dach does this year.

  23. For Buff, Ott, Wings, habs all have got great young players, which teams will be better? Any can for me, they have to get great coaching, roster come together, secondary scoring, D involved in O, great goaltending, etc fun to see these great young rosters, hope all can progress.

  24. IF CLB had a history of spending money wisely, I would say this is a home run for them getting that much cap room and only losing a player who wanted out and a 2nd rd pick (plus they got a player back). HOWEVER CLB doesn't have that track record, so lord knows how this goes for them. Maybe bring back Foligno for 3×7? (Yes I'm joking) Mtl is simply putting chips on the table looking for a big pay-off, or cut bait when the contract is over…

  25. Adding 40 extra goals for a team is pretty huge, considering how many games the Habs lost with a 1 goal deficit.

Obviously, that's if Laine puts up those numbers… And you also have Hutson who could do some damage, and I also feel like Caufield could certainly take the next step. With those 3, I can easily see like 50-60 more goal than last season's total.

  26. Jets fan here. We dodged a bullet. How is his 8.5 justified? Let’s say I’m sceptical of his ability to perform.

  27. Montreal has been a good place for players who used to be good to revive their careers in recent history. Took guys like Max Domi who was failing miserably in AZ, and immediately gets 72 points on Habs. Something similar could happen with laine with him scoring 30-40 goals. He has 119 points in his last 128 games played, which is still respectable and it’s considered the worst stretch of his career.

  28. 33 or so games lost by 1 goal last season. With Laine and Dach (if healthy) in the lineup regularly, they will win more games this year. If their team ddfense improves and the PP is even slightly better, we will be fighting for a PO spot.

  29. I think they have a chance at the playoffs. Let's not forget that last year we didn't have Dach, Hudson, and Laine.
It's a major addition considering we lost about 40% of our games by 1 goal.
