Based on his comments here, I think this issue was just as simple as he didn’t want to play in Winnipeg.
It really sucks, and I wish that he wasn’t so hyped up by the Jets social media team, as well as I wish his own comments were a little more mediated when his time was here . However, No kids going to come to their first development camp and trash the city, even if that’s what they’re really thinking. That would be career suicide.
Honestly, glad we got a relatively fair exchange for him. It’s his prerogative to choose not to sign. Chevy did good getting an asset for him that’s relatively similar.
I feel like we is a community should just let the kid live his life and move on.
If this sub could put a hiatus on anything related to Laine or Rutger for the rest of the off-season that would be cool.
Id like to hear more about how ripped and prepped players in our system have gotten this summer.
I think this all boils down to the perception that the Jets let their prospects age in the AHL before they become full time NHLers. He paid his own way to go to the first rookie camp after his draft year. He was excited to be a Jet. But I think seeing how other prospects were being sent back down to the Moose made him think twice and decide not to sign here. I don’t think this is a Winnipeg thing, more about the perception of how prospects are treated. He thinks he’s ready for the big step, and I hope he is. I was excited to see him develop as a Jet but ultimately am glad he’s gone given how he feels he’s above playing in the A. Don’t need that kind of ego around. Be humble.
I don’t like the precedent this sets for future draft picks. It’s as easy as saying I don’t fit in, so I won’t sign. And presto, you get want you want.
I’m going with the Kevin Hayes convinced him not to sign theory that was posted here a few days ago.
