R/hockey has been doing some major handwringing over this kid. They keep talking about how much they want players to have personalities, but him betting on himself and picking an unconventional forward number is too much.

I wish teams would just honor numbers instead of retiring them, knowing some teams will never use a lot of numbers between 1 and 20 is a shame, they have such a classic, clean look to them.

I’m trying to think of any other forwards with the number 2 and can’t think of any. Interesting choice.

Heck yeah. I was hoping he would stick with it. It’s such an unconventional number for a forward. I actually can’t find any other notable forwards that have worn #2. Apparently his inspiration for wearing it was dutch player Mike Dalhuisen, who played for the Lincoln Stars, who was coached by his dad. Mike was a defenseman as well so he must have left a lasting impression on Rutger.

Randos online are up in arms over him wearing this number because it’s supposed to be a D man’s number. Like who cares? And he’s a two-way power forward so it’s fitting.

Awesome – can’t wait to see him play this season!

So you would be okay with someone wearing #66 today or #71. #87 in the future? Players numbers are retired from teams who have made a huge impact and contribution to the team/club. Crosby’s number has already been retired league wide with a lot of veterans and coaches from across the league telling kids that 87 is not available

Blasphemous. That belongs to Jimmy Paek, and Jimmy Paek alone.

We miss you Chad😭

It doesn’t really matter but historically #2 is a defensemen #. I can’t think of any forward to wear such a low #. In fact, other than Taylor Hall I can’t think of any forward to wear a # lower than 7.

so are offence/defense numbers just racism for hockey players

Little known fact, but our very own, beloved « ol two niner », wore #2 in his rookie year for the Penguins. Michel Dion was wearing 29 that season in goal.
Bourquey, then was sent down for a season, then came back wearing #4, and then finally he got 29 in 86.
Though, I note it was not until two more years later, that he switched from Defense to Forward.

For the rest of his career I’ll think there’s a defenceman joining the rush whenever I see #2 moving up the ice

Should be retired for 2-time Cup champ Jim Paek
