How does the depth chart for defense even look at this point? Like, you’ve got your Top 6 of:

Rielly, Tanev, Benoit, McCabe, OEL, Liljegren

Hakanpaa may or may not be a Leaf and/or a real person

Then where’s it go from there? Is Timmins still a guy in our system? Is Rifai after him? What about those depth guys just signed? What about other Marlies guys like Niemala?

No risk deal. A guy who (I assume) likes Toronto gets to stay here, we can call him up in a pinch if we need him, the cap hit is fully buriabke and meaningless, and if we absolutely need that contract slot, guys like this get moved all the time with no difficulty.

2 yrs is pretty significant. A change from Dubas’ 1 yr extensions. Rifai must have some value to get 2 yrs. Plus, to me anyways, it’s a message to younger prospects that if you work hard and develop your game, the Leafs will find room for you. I think it’s great stuff.

  4. Nice he looked good in that 1 sheltered game and all year on the Marlies
