Honestly, it was dumb luck this trade worked out. If tampa drafted/developed better, this could have easily blown up in their face.
The Benning/Aquilini philosophy was the hockey version of a Vancouver driver in the snow spinning his wheels. The Miller trade was the car getting out of the snow with everyone thinking, how did that happen?
When that trade happened I wasn't too impressed because the Canucks so rarely have draft picks (for some reason lol)
And I didn't know who he was at all (like, legit had never heard of him) and he turned out being awesome right away.
Then people got mad at him because he had emotional outbursts during games…. But that is because he is so competitive and wants to win.
Now look at him, Canucks are so lucky to have him for his prime, and his contract will end up being a bargain for years to come

This year i am not worried scoring production, its goal tending. Is Demko back? And if he is, will he last a full season and possible playoffs? Silovs… great goalie. But is he good enough to get the Canucks back to the playoffs?
All he needed was a coach he could look up to and respect.

I never minded the Canucks trading for JT Miller… just thought the Canucks could have maybe squeezed a bit more out of the TBL. Tampa was in cap hell and really needed to clear JT's $5 million cap it. Thought the 1st was a tad rich for doing the Lightnings a "favour".

The problem with these kinds of trades is that they can either make you a contender, or you're just paying an older guy to have great regular seasons and the team spins its tires in the playoffs. You win championships when the GM has timed the growth of the team correctly so that all the top guys are in their prime at the exact same time and you catch lightning in a bottle. If you're smart, you can sustain that for a while, but for that to happen, you have to get the first one. If you look at the Cup winners since the Cap was brought in, many of those teams at least had secondary help from guys on ELC. Sure, there will still be teams who win championships whose top players are in their mid to late 20s and into their 30s, but I think the majority of those teams going forward will have top players on ELC, because sooner or later, guys get paid and you can't keep everyone. Which brings me back to my original point – paying guys big money to put up regular season points, but you win nothing in the end. Remember the early to mid 2000s?
