I mean it’s Makar, every avs defenseman record is either held by him or close to being broken.

Bourque is a legendary HOFer but most of his career is with Boston.

Foote… defender not defenseman. Cale may have all the offensive records but he has work to do to be our best defensive player ever

  3. HarryMarx1312

Best defender is Foote, best D-Man is Makar.

  4. twhockey99

The category says best DEFENDER- not Defenseman. Have to go with Foote. Best Defenseman is Cale but best defensive player is Footer.

I know everyone’s gonna say Makar but in terms of pure out and out defending it’s Foote by a mile.

It’s healthy to have a debate on this category, since the next 2 are locks with no competition.

  7. TiliaConnoisseur

It’s Makar, with all due respect to the very close runner up Foote

Cale will end up as the greatest Avs D-man of all time, but right now it has to be Footer.

Given the wording, Foote is the only answer.

Foote for sure. Had such a presence on the ice.

Adam Foote. The one the only. Legend.

  12. Devon Toews > Foote, defensively

DT has been around 100% dWAR as an av and Foote was of the generation where defense was perceived in flawed ways

Also foote had very weak defensive results in his mid to late 30s which suggests he was just solid or good in prime

I mean in general almost noone can be better qualified for this than Toews at 100% as it often is the very ceiling

Its super hard to pick between Foote and Makar

Hey guys, let’s split the difference… Toews

For real though, until last year I continuously noticed that I never saw that dude make any mistakes with or without the puck. Always made the smart play. Like a defensive Sakic.

it says defender as much as I love Makar it goes to Foote.

Footes physicality and jumping in to defend teammates.

Adams Foote no question from me

    Bad ass on the ice

The best defender that ever put on an Avs uniform? Ray Bourque.

I would actually go with Toews on this one. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Footer, but he was more like Manson than Toews — including taking some ill advised penalties (100PIM vs 1534PIM). Toews is also +156 vs +99, not that +/- is the best indicator. Also is says defender (not D-man), so I am going to throw in Peter Forsberg as well. No Avs player has ever won the Selke, but Foppa did finish second and he could be a menace on defense. We better not go through this board without Forsberg on there.

Just going to throw a couple names out there that might fit after the obvious BBFMT:

    Karlis Skrastins
    Stephane Yelle (defensive center)

It’s so tough bc we have some good choices but I want to say Foote. I’ll never forget when the Avs came to Raleigh the season Duchene was a rookie. My cousin and I sat behind the Avs and when Duchene came to the bench we were jokingly offering Duchene beer, and Foote gave us a nasty glare which we looked away and when we looked back he was laughing. McLeod, however, was telling us to throw it over hahah!
